While we of course don't know how much TikTok could help new Gaga material in 2024, historically, it has done relatively little for new Gaga music (see the Chromatica era and Hold My Hand), but it has done wonders for her catalog. It will be extremely disappointing to see that relatively consistent boost of song after song that we've been seeing since around 2022 go away. Government Hooker, Judas, Just Dance, Bloody Mary, LoveGame, Paparazzi, Heavy Metal Lover, and more have reached new heights in the streaming era (and for some, just in general) thanks to TikTok. I hope this UMG "time out" is short lived because this type of catalog revival isn't even Gaga specific and it's very foolish and short sighted on their part to focus on the slim profits they get directly from TikTok while ignoring the increasing profits the actual music is getting from that TikTok exposure that surely eclipses whatever slim pickings they get from TikTok itself. It is truly shocking UMG is fumbling the bag like this. They went from begging their artists to make TikToks to fully pulling the catalog. On one hand, I understand if TikTok is unwilling to pay or protect the music from AI, but on the other hand, I think UMG needs Tiktok more than Tiktok needs UMG. I don’t know if we’ll have to wait as long as Summer, but I see no valid reason to believe we’re getting music in Q1. There’s literally Zero indication she’s at the end of the recording process.
