I'd like to think if Marina's Tumblr virality happened through TikTok now, it would have translated to more tangible commercial success. But I also don't know if it would have had the type of deep rooted (albeit niche) cultural impact if it had happened any other way than how it did. I guess you can't have your cake and eat it too all the time.- Albums with low pure sales but high RIAA certificates?

I am once again astounded that you think you can get away with saying whatever lil thought passes through your mind as if we can't check these things ourselves. The better question is, has she surpassed Rihanna?- SYG: 2026
Katy's stans are so far removed from how current charts work that they're proclaiming a not that atypical Sunday drop as proof of bots. Meanwhile, if their fave's latest single lost the same amount of streams, it would have negative daily streams and would serve a "they shipped it, but it got shipped back" tea.- Is the Global 200 a better benchmark than the US Hot 100?
It really is, for a variety of reasons. 1. It will always be more impressive to do better on a global scale than a local one, even if that local one is for the biggest country. For example, if Artist A is #1 in the US but #10 globally and Artist B is #10 in the US but #1 globally, Artist B is in fact the bigger artist even though they are weaker in the largest market. Accounting for all consumption across the globe is inarguably the most accurate indicator of actual, full picture popularity. I'm not sure why this is such a struggle for so many to understand. 2. Even ignoring the scope of each chart, the Global 200 is built on a far better foundation than the Hot 100 — it allows songs to continue charting as long as they have the consumption to instead of cutting them off at arbitrary points, only counts consumption directly from consumers (AKA it doesn't include radio), and as a cherry on top, includes over the double the positions. The former two points inherently make it a more accurate chart to measure which songs are most consumed/popular. All this being said, the history the Hot 100 has that the Global 200 doesn't does make it more meaningful when comparing songs or artists across history, and it is obviously important to have a chart for the world's largest music market. The Global 200 also isn't perfect — though I haven't seen this explicitly written out anywhere, it supposedly doesn't include some markets (apparently China and maybe some others?), which if true is nonsensical given the point of the chart. I have hope that with time and the building of chart history that will provide, the Global 200 will be seen as important as the Hot 100, if not even more important.- SYG: 2026
Good lord some of the Kats here continue to reach IQ lows I had not thought possible even in the stan community. Ironic how it goes hand in hand with the charting lows their fave continues to sink towards. Like fave like stan I suppose.- Spotify | Katy Perry - Watch It Burn | Day 24: 184,313 streams
