Civics

ATRL's official politics and current events section.

Civics Rules

The Civics section is a space for thoughtful discussion about politics, current events, and global issues. ATRL is a progressive and inclusive community, and this forum reflects those values. Debate is welcome, but harmful ideologies and discriminatory rhetoric will not be given space here. Please review the rules below before posting.

Conduct

Members may openly criticize political figures, ideologies, public policy, and systems of power.

  • Debate must focus on ideas, not other members. Personal attacks, harassment, baiting, and antagonistic behavior are not allowed.

  • The Zero Tolerance Policy (ZTP) applies fully. Racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, xenophobia, ableism, religious bigotry, and other discriminatory rhetoric are not “political viewpoints” and will not be excused as such.

  • Attempts to sanitize or reframe hateful ideologies as legitimate political discussion will be removed.

  • Discussions can become heated, but we encourage stepping back when needed. You are not obligated to reply to every post.

  • Targeted or retaliatory reporting of members based solely on political differences is discouraged and may result in a WP.

  • Do not tell other members to leave the section or forum because of their political stance. Challenge arguments, not their right to participate.

Political Base Threads

Members engage with Civics differently. Some prefer general political conversation; others prefer sustained debate. To support both styles, Civics includes two types of base threads.

Casual Conversation Base Threads

These threads are intended for lighter discussion, quick reactions, and general political chatter.
Extended, point-by-point debate should be reserved for debate-focused threads.

Debate-Focused Base Threads

These threads invite deeper political discussion, structured debate, and sustained argument.

Debate may occasionally appear in casual threads. Moderators will redirect when appropriate. Please allow space for both conversation styles as the section continues to develop.

Posting Expectations

To maintain a productive and inclusive political environment:

  • Keep posts relevant to the topic.

  • Engage with arguments directly and avoid derailing threads.

  • Do not spam slogans, talking points, or culture-war bait intended only to inflame.

  • Do not use identity arguments or “political differences” to justify bigotry or discriminatory tropes.

Harmful Ideologies

Some ideologies directly conflict with ATRL’s values and community standards. Posts promoting, defending, or validating extremist or hateful viewpoints — including white supremacy, anti-LGBT rhetoric, misogyny, and conspiracy-based hate movements — will be moderated as violations of ZTP, not treated as political opinions.

FAQ

Can members say “Fk [politician]”?**
Yes. Politicians are public officials with direct influence over public life. Strong language directed at political figures is permitted in Civics. Outside Civics, similar comments may result in a WP.

Can members express negative feelings about politicians or policies?
Yes. Criticism of public officials, legislation, and political agendas — including harsh criticism — is allowed. However, wishing death or violence on any individual is not permitted.

Can members criticize another member’s ideology?
You may critique political beliefs, arguments, and positions. You may not attack members personally or frame their humanity or worth as lesser because of their political stance.
