There's nothing wrong with being a "culture vulture". All my favorite artists got inspired by different cultures and used it to make art. There's nothing wrong with that. Madonna for example is the queen of "culture vulturism" and her discography and performances wouldn't be nearly as iconic without it. This is a non-problem that was invented by American culture wars Twitter in the past 10 years.

I find the Showgirl album genuinely awful sonically, but the cultural messaging is almost more disappointing. Taylor Swift was subjected to openly sexist attacks from the American president, yet she seemingly chose not to address any of that. Instead, we get what sounds like a response to Charli XCX's lyrics and bragging about being the woman a football player chose. That's where she wants to direct her energy? To me, the album feels weirdly MAGA-coded and anti-feminist: so much emphasis on being chosen by a man, with petty score-settling taking priority over anything more meaningful. There's nothing wrong with wanting marriage or celebrating a relationship. It's the framing that feels regressive, especially coming from someone whose public image has leaned so heavily on female independence. It almost feels like she's trying to distance herself from the "childless cat lady" image and reposition herself as more palatable to conservative, middle-American audiences. But if that's the intention, I don't see it working. The people who already see her as a liberal Democrat aren't suddenly going to embrace her because she sings about settling down with a football player. Meanwhile, that shift risks alienating people who connected with her independence in the first place. The whole thing comes across as smug, defensive, and exhausting. For someone with that much cultural influence, it's such a disappointing use of it.
