Lorde - "Hammer"

Featured Replies

This might be my favourite so far.

But I'm pretty sure half this site was complaining about the long outros on songs like Supercut.

Very much the same. Also I can't even imagine what it would feel like to get bored during "Supercut", what a horrible existence. 💅🏼

Or Green Light having a weird structure, Liability being too short, The Louvre lacking a proper chorus and explosion and on and on and on

I feel like the issue with this album so far is that she focused on creating a soundscape that she knew would resonate with her fans who didn't like Solar Power but then she kinda stopped there. There is such a lack of melodies, of structure, of something that sticks and that instantly grabs you.

This builds up to something and goes nowhere, Lorde is 1/3 for me

I like this more than the previous singles. In general I'm warming up to this era

This is a beautiful and inspirational song

L**a is somewhere seething :-*

She's 3/3 for me. I get the criticisms that the song feels a bit too short, but it's interesting at every turn, which also makes it fully realised to me. Idk, she's definitely edging the faguettes a bit with this hinting at euphoria that doesn't quite materialize but I trust the vision.

I like it, I'm finding interesting the sounds she's been using in these songs. I see what people say about lacking a moment of explosion, it does not bother me that much, but I do wonder how the songs would be with a cathartic release of the build up.

Excited to hear Virgin next week.

sadly the weakest track out of the new singles but still a banger

1. MOTY

2.WWT

3. Hammer

The historical revisionism going on at /popheads is so funny to me, now Solar Power is revered as an album with strong melodies, hooks and proper climaxes :sabrina:

idk about the whole SP album but Mood Ring is better than all three Virgin songs we've heard so far

i really want to like this era but i'm just not connecting with any of these songs... maybe WWT, but even that just feels like a rehash of her Melodrama sound. it kinda pisses me off that the album cover is so cool because the songs don't match that energy at all :dies:

i'll wait for the whole album to drop to make my judgment but so far i don't think it'll be on par with PH or Melodrama.

It feels more like an album track but I actually like this!

Best analysis of the new music I've seen.

Wasn't Lorde always known for not following a formula to make pop music — and that's what made her music interesting in the first place? Wasn't her minimalist approach to music what made her stand out in the landscape from the beginning? Why all of a sudden we're expecting a big explosion on every song she releases?

I don't know why people are suddenly expecting her to create songs with pre-established structure or, like, catchy melodies when she only delivered that in a handful of songs in her discography. Like, that's the reason she was thrown into the "alternative" label despite making… pop music. Funny enough, she talked about how she doesn't have a lot of knowledge about making music (as in music theory) and makes everything very intuitively.

It's like I'm missing something here and we've all been listening to different Lordes this whole time. Like, if you're looking for pop songs that fit the standard of what a pop song should sound like, there are so many artists doing that — like Dua Lipa, and I don't mean this as shade at all.
