Lorde - "Hammer"

I jusr can't connect with anything from this album, it all feels like she's trying too hard to be "cool". I might cancel my pre order.

How do any of these songs so far sound like she's trying to be cool (side note she's already cool!!)? The lyric and melodic compositions of all of them are very typical to her songwriting. She is just exploring new sounds. Perhaps you just don't like the sounds?

A SINGLE . :clap3: Balls in her court with this one. Still hoping for an extended version of MOTY.

I will wait til I hear Hammer to give my final verdict but I kinda agree

Maybe trying to "be cool" isn't the right way to say it, but it sounds like she's avoiding trying to sound too generic or mainstream, not that she ever has been. But it doesn't feel interesting enough sonically or lyrically to really grab my attention. It's not enough to sound different from what's on the radio, music should sound cutting edge, whether in the general pop music sphere or just for your own artistic journey and that's just not happening so far, at least for me.

It feels… what did Madonna say…? Reductive, when comparing Lorde against her own standards.

first, it feels like she's trying too hard in recreating a vibe and a sound that clearly doesn't belong to her anymore

There we go again... LOL :dies:

These people are saying this implying that she wants to pull up something like a brat era, when she couldn't care less. The whole concept from this album came from her in 2022, and in 2023 she was already writing/producing stuff for the album, with title, concept and visual already in mind. People just simply didn't like it (which is fine), but are giving the most ignorant reasons to justify their opinion.

I think some people are feeling weird towards the songwriting because Lorde herself said she was trying to be more impulsive on Virgin instead of overthinking her lyrics.

I agree that her songwriting feels way more simplistic in these songs thus far, and that's definitely something I can see being pointed out by critics when the album drops, but it doesn't really bother me — personally. And I like that she is trying new things!

Idk how to rank these tbh they're all sort of interchangeably just ok. No standouts, DEF no career highlights...

I'm beginning to worry this will be the second album in a row that just isn't for me :( feel like I might have just grown out of Lorde. But already an upgrade over Borer Powerless at least!! I'm still hopeful - and very excited to give the FULL album a chance next week :clap3:

The polarising opinions on here :dancehall: should I cancel my signed picture disc vinyl now because I listen to others' opinions?

Just listened to Hammer. It's actually better than the other 2 songs, but it shares the same issue. They all sound like they are too short and can be developed a bit more towards the end. Everything feels a bit anticlimatic.

Y'all are honestly fusing your brains with this whole "it should be longer" lmaoooooo like the song has an average length and it does its job very well let's leave those extended outros for melo and sp shall we?

i understand some of you wanted MOTY to be a bit longer, but i think hammer is too loud and messy to drag without getting difficult to hear. i think the song is the perfect length!

and ughh the melody of the verses are so pretty and her vocals on the beat drop are just ethereal
