The Game is suing Virgin and UMG over his underwhelming album sales of his 2022 album Drillmatic – Heart vs. Mind, claiming they didn't spend most of the promised advertising budget and that sales of the record suffered for it. The legal complaint was filed by 100 Entertainment, the independent record label run by The Game. 100 Entertainment had an exclusive distribution deal with UMG's Virgin Music Group for Drillmatic, which debuted at No. 12 with 25k units on the Billboard 200 in August 2022 and spent two weeks on the chart. The album had a considerably underwhelming commercial performance, especially given its massive 30-song tracklist, which featured appearances from Kanye West, Big Sean, Drake, and more, with production by the likes of Timbaland, Swizz Beatz, Mike Dean, and Hit-Boy. The lawsuit alleges that the album would have performed better if UMG had put more money into promotion. 100 Entertainment says UMG only spent $179,000 of the promised $500,000 recoupable marketing budget for Drillmatic, skipping key digital opportunities and failing to spend even a single dollar on radio promotion. According to the lawsuit, 100 Entertainment had to put up its own funds to keep the album rollout on schedule. The label says it covered a "substantial portion" of the music video production for the single "Stupid" with Big Sean, and UMG has yet to reimburse these costs. 100 Entertainment is now suing UMG and Virgin for breach of contract. The label is seeking financial damages of at least $500,000 for the album's "diminished commercial performance."x

A new lawsuit alleges the Olivia Dean song "I've Seen It," from her critically acclaimed album The Art of Loving, copies an unmistakable melody from the Bill Withers hit "Just the Two of Us." Filed in federal court in Los Angeles and obtained by Rolling Stone, the new complaint from the publisher behind Withers' catalog says the similarities between Dean's song and the 1981 Grammy-winning R&B classic are "obvious and inescapable." The publisher says a musicologist who reviewed the songs found "substantial similarities" and repeated copying of a "distinctively protectable melody." The seven-page copyright infringement complaint names Capitol Records, Universal Music Group, and Dean's publishing companies as the defendants. It does not seek damages from Dean or her co-writers on the song, Bastian Langebaek and Max Wolfgang. The plaintiff says it reached out to the defendants on Aug. 17, notifying them of the alleged infringement, but they allegedly continued with the song's distribution, licensing, and commercial exploitation without any change in credit. Sia sold a 50% stake in her catalogue to the entertainment and investment company Pophouse, the Swedish music catalog investment firm co-founded by Abba's Björn Ulvaeus, for a total of $180 million -- but, the economics of the sale are slightly complicated by her recent divorce from Dan Bernad. According to the docs, Sia gets a payout of $165 million for the songs she penned before she got married to Dan (including "Chandelier," "Titanium" and "Cheap Thrills") and he's agreed to waive any rights to that dough, if Sia gives him $1 million. A quick scoreboard check shows $164 million for Sia, and $1 mil for Dan. However, there's the little matter of another $15 million Sia's getting for songs she made after they got married in 2023. According to the docs, that bundle will be put aside -- and held in escrow -- for the exes to potentially fight over later, if they can't agree on how to split it. The star will be collaborating with Pophouse to launch an immersive digital avatar production based around her music. An official announcement is expected imminently. The singer-songwriter's plans to crossover into the digital realm will include a show incorporating her songs as an artist and as a writer, according to a source familiar with the deal, and utilize her vocals on global hits like Rihanna's "Diamonds," which has reached more than 2 billion Spotify streams. The show's debut is at least a couple years out, adds the source, and may tour to select cities, though it's still in the early stages of planning. Pophouse's stake in Sia's catalog is limited to publishing and master recording rights, and does not include name and likeness. An insider estimates Sia's songs bring in $18 million annually in writing and performance royalties. RAYE, who appears on one of the issue's three worldwide covers, is set to perform at the TIME100 Next event in New York on Oct. 29. TIME paired each honoree with a guest contributor to write about their work and influence. With cover girl RAYE, Anya Tayor-Joy spoke to how special the singer-songwriter is as an artist. "She has that rare ability to make something deeply personal feel universal, turning heartbreak, humor and hard-won honesty into music that reaches straight through you," penned the actress. Rita Ora is being sued by her former manager for more than £3million. Her former manager Sarah Stennett , who helped make Rita a star after signing her in 2009, has lodged papers at the High Court claiming her firm FAE Ventures is owed millions. The documents claim Rita violated the terms of her contract by failing to hand over a cut of her earnings from tours and TV work. The biggest chunk of the alleged underpayments stands at just over £1.7million - with Sarah's firm claiming there were "impermissible deductions" for professional services including advertising, accountancy and insurance. Rita is also alleged to have hidden more than £1.1million by "unreporting touring income" between spring 2019 and 2020 while on her Phoenix World Tour, which included seven UK arena shows and a night at London's O2 Arena. Paperwork also suggests that up to £6million made from those gigs allegedly went missing from the statements. Sarah's firm claims Rita misrepresented her earnings while working as a judge on The Masked Singer. It alleges that commission from the fifth series was paid "on the basis of invoices which did not accurately reflect the sums to which the defendant was contractually entitled".
