I think a lot of this is age. To young people, I'm sure all the Gen-Z releases felt everywhere. It you mean the last true imperial pop era of the golden age then 1989. That difference is not age. The digital and physical eras were fantastic for enormous album campaigns. That just doesn't exist anymore. If we're being so incredibly for real, the reason the Eras Era felt so special is because it felt just like an old school era except it was somehow all her music everywhere all at once. Multiple TV releases, the biggest tour in history by a country mile. It felt like a real old school era where something about Taylor was on the news/viral every day for 2 years.

I think this depends how you're defining a successful single. There are plenty of people who have multiple successful singles in charting and consumption for 2020s eras. Besides, that's not even really what is being asked. You can have a smash album era without smash hits. Likewise, you can have albums with a big hit that still have excellent consumption outside the singles. I think albums where the bulk of an album's units come from one song are the offending projects here.

And yet you run around this forum calling Abracadabra a hit…it that case Taylor has about 40 smashes!

Taylor is still number 1 if you reduce her number of tracks to lower than Billie and Olivia's, sis. And she debuted in 2006. They could pass her in streams (which will literally never happen) and the gulf in actual sales will remain so immense that they could still never hope to overcome it.

And why would they know checks notes The Alcott? No matter how badly you cling to your delusions the GP absolutely does know songs like the 2 billion streamed+ on one platform Lover and cardigan. Opalite is hitting 1 billion at the same rate as Manchild and isn't even the big hit from the album. Many of the songs listed aren't even proper singles. Many of the others like Fortnight, …Ready For It?, willow, Delicate, YNTCD, and Broken Heart would be hailed on here as bonafide smashes if Lady Gaga or Beyonce had released them. The funniest thing of all is that Taylor still has numerous megasmashes with stellar chart runs you decided to omit for some reason. Remove all the songs in the OP (even though some of them are also clearly enormous) and you're left with like 10 songs that are diamond+ eligible with incredible chart runs.

Considering she has more songs with 30+ weeks on that Hot 100 than any other female artist in history, I'd say no problem. Thanks for showing that even her album tracks/songs released on one random format chart for multiple weeks, though.

Well said. I also think it might be a different story if any HP boycott was even a little effective. The brand is booming. Legacy sales are huge. Hogwarts Legacy was a runaway smash. If the show is even decent, it will likely be one of HBO's most successful projects ever. I think these type of boycotts largely work best to help us reconcile our personal morality. There isn't a person alive today that doesn't actively support something that gives terrible people money. People calling for HP boycotts…on Twitter. The jokes write themselves. I admire people who stick to their principles and disengage with IPs they love, but the reality is 99.9% of people are contradicting their professed views with something they enjoy/use/consume that is completely optional. We all have to draw those lines for ourselves. And for the record I think it's perfectly reasonable to boycott HP on those grounds.

The answer would not be a mainstream pop star or a person younger than 60 if you truly mean universally beloved/almost never the target of critique. Dolly represents a bygone time that is becoming more distant by the day. Hyper polarization and social media's reward structure for negative engagement prevents any modern person from filling this role. I'd probably agree with Julie Andrews.

Idk, people definitely did listen to her when she was alive, she's one of the most successful country musicians in history. Ofc people are going to go listen to honor someone's memory when they pass. It doesn't mean they didn't appreciate her when she was here, people just want to feel connected to someone they loved in a horrible moment.

There isn't a single line in this about commercial success. Reading comprehension is key, girl! If I cared about her flopping, why would I have said I enjoyed Chromatica? It's not like Mayhem was some commercial juggernaut either. Sans DWAS, ARTPOP is bigger. Interesting to hear you characterize ARTPOP and Joanne as flops, though.

Growing up, I'd say my stanning of Taylor and Gaga were comparable. I was REALLY in it for Gaga to nearly that level (active on GGD and everything) until sometime post-ARTPOP. I was FULLY checked-in during ARTPOP and defended the album fiercely online, but in the back of my mind I understood why the wheels were following off the cart culturally and creatively for her at that point. I think I could've been easily recaptured if Joanne had been more my taste, but it just made the gap bigger. I remember tuning in on my computer to some random stream to hear the Perfect Illusion radio premiere. I was…not happy lol. She also had some prolonged periods of inactivity and I just fell out of it. Now, I look back on that time very fondly and love TF-BTW so deeply. I also loved ASIB and Mayhem and like Chromatica just fine. ATRL nonsense aside, I'll always root for Gaga IRL and she has a very special place in my heart. Abracadabra would've been my most played song of the year if The Fate of Ophelia hadn't been released. I'd still absolutely call her my number 2 and it's a distant victory over number 3. I own all her albums on physical media including 2 copies of Harlequin. But now only Taylor holds that holy stan-goggles-nearly-always position for me. I've never started obsessively hating an artist that I enjoy. I'll fling mud on here from time to time and even enjoy laughing privately at some of the Taylor lashings, but generally like and respect all the pop girls.

The silliest thing about the Showgirl hysteria is pretending that releasing one critically lukewarm album with slightly worse longevity than usual 20 years into one's career undoes a critically lauded discography that contains 9 albums with 200 weeks on the BB200. Literal best longevity of all-time. TTPD is coming, too. Hopefully Midnights gets a much-deserved renaissance. I think it was negatively affected by the sheer amount of highly consumed Taylor content. It even shared its actual era with the Eras Era, rerecordings, and Taymania. The album has so many great and under appreciated tracks in addition to the stellar pop singles. Maroon, YOYO,K, Midnight Rain, Labyrinth, The Great War, BTTWK, WCS, Dear Reader, Hits Different. Let me give the good sis a spin!

I think one of the biggest problems of Woke 1 (if I can use that framing) was the idea that no minority group bears responsibility for any internal problems within the group. Can you atribute the drug use and sex addiction in the gay community to systemic prejudice? Absolutely. I still think that acknowledgement and knowledge is helpful and important. But it should be the basis of making empowered changes that alter those material conditions. That also means change coming from the community itself. Advocating for sweeping systemic change is a good thing. Waiting and wishing for it while ignoring material reality and surrendering our own agency to affect change within the community is a bad thing.
