ppl using those gifs are not generating them themselves tho... the gif already exists. it would only really be hypocritical/performative if they were creating their own to use.

I'm sure just a few more protests will end it.

I don't think recent backlash against generative AI is chronically online. People have genuine concerns about the economic and environmental concerns that come with it.

I do think the unnuanced take that AI has zero beneficial use in society and is an evil that must be completely eradicated or destroyed is probably a chronically online take though. Most chronically online takes tend to be unnuanced, IMO.

We're still helping normalize it by constantly using them. People here already tried to make plenty of (awful) AI MJ gifs just to see if they get a hit like with the OG one

No. A massive datacenter was recently approved near where I grew up and large swathes of people are furiously protesting it. The structural issues that this kind of technology has on communities is felt and reacted to in ways that are most certainly not "chronically online" and they're being mounted by people who probably have no idea what the phrase even means.

It's an excellent technology just needs regulations

The problem is not the tech, is the people who control it and the government that we have now that is bought and does nothing

It isn't. But AI is here to stay. When you have Google, Microsoft, Nvidia, AMD, Facebook, even the US, China, and a few other governments pouring money into it. No amount of protests will end it.

AI, like anything else, has pros and cons.

One thing I find a bit funny in an ironic sense is that many who hate AI also want to tear down capitalism and corporate America, yet they list as a concern protecting these very jobs that AI threatens.

If the corporate system is about to get disrupted, that's potentially a good thing, because right now, it's essentially a psychopathic system. I also won a small claims court case against my property manager thanks to guidance from AI. The humanity has already been sucked out of corporate America a long time ago.

However, I don't think it's good for the arts.

I think it's much more chronically online to believe that it's not an issue, frankly. The people who are so into it that they deride those who resist it and make them out to be Luddites are a lot weirder about the whole thing than basically anyone else, other than the death cultist billionaires funding the whole situation.

I think a lot of people make use of it as a daily tool, but I think a lot of those people still agree when they hear someone say something to the effect of "I want AI to solve healthcare problems and help us not have to work, not take away all the creative pursuits and leave me at risk of being laid off with no recourse." Even those of us most strongly against what generative AI has become and is allegedly aiming to become realize that the more traditional machine learning version of artificial intelligence is crucial for progress in fields that themselves are critical to keep pushing forward. It's just that the generative side, inflated by subsidies and endless promises of revenue and superintelligence as it is, isn't crucial for any of its current major applications and comes at the risk of our environment, our privacy, workers' livelihoods, and more.

No, it's very real and very valid.

The company that my best friend works at initially promised its employees that AI would be used to "work smarter, not reduce headcount". Now, after training the AI off their employees for over a year, they're laying off hundreds of staff by bullying them into signing termination agreements. My friend and his colleagues are making sure to communicate their honest feelings about this development to their boss through their current work ethic

Elsewhere in the world, people are facing water and electricity supply shortages because of AI data centers being built in their neighborhoods and disrupting the balance of energy demand & supply.

The elites of the world want to build an economy that functions without the need for workers and pesky things such as having to pay said workers or observe workers' rights. An economy that generates profits for the rich without the need for human capital, basically. The "AI revolution" is the most crucial step they need to take in order to accomplish that.

Not really, I work in the university sector and AI is constantly being discussed in relation to sustainability and academic integrity.

No it's not.

The only good thing that could come out of AI (the way it is today) is that the internet will become such a joke, everything will be fake content and bots that no one will know what is real anymore and what is AI/bot and people will slowly start to be done with social media etc. and might finally decide to go out and connect with other people in a real meaningful ways and touch grass.
