Well, Taylor had already had 2 imperial phases before this one, so i guess she just learned what not to do the next time around by now.

Like, you're basically describing the Fearless era. By 1989 she course corrected a lot but ended up making terrible mistakes in her attempt of being liked by everyone.

i know someone online who has a theory that taylor's imperial phase has been going on since OG red at least and shows no sign of ending and it's distorting the structures of pop music in all sorts of weird ways. it's definitely different to, say, someone like gaga or ariana, where there's a brief spell when everything goes massive and then the wheels seem to come off a bit, even in quite a small way.

i think the difference with taylor is that, if it really is just unending like this and everything she releases is going to be this huge commercial scythe laying everything to waste for years on end, then you barely have to even think about it anymore? i think the only thing i can compare it to is the beatles, where they basically had a seven year run of #1 hits, but that's different because pop music was so new and changing all the time, which they both led and followed

taylor exists in a much more static field and there's a sense that, even when she very obviously changes (like, the 2020s have definitely been a bit more sedate and cosy) people don't even notice anymore, partly because pop music goes in cycles now and taylor just rides above it all - i think her influence is baked in now rather than leading with each new album - and partly because people like saying stupid sh*t like "she's the mcdonalds of pop music!" when she's releasing somber 2 hour meditations on romantic loss like TTPD

It might be bloated but I like to think about it as an anthology literally and figuratively. The different analogies and scenes she paint in it just so she describes a common narrative is just superb. You got aliens, cowboys, angels, ghosts, greeks, witches, children stories, 90s and 00s nostalgia, she had it all.

There are some songs that aged poorly for me (Toys, Heart, Florida, Afraid) and some that I skip from time to time (Aimee, Cassandra, Robin) but it's a perfectly crafted product, more so the Anthology album. I just couldn't imagine it without its 31 songs, and I was in that position since it released (perhaps because i listened to the earliest chicken and then the first few days I focused solely on the Anthology). The album has some of her top songs lyrically and/or sonically, my personal favs are Fresh, loml, Black Dog, getyouback, Chloe, How Did, High School, IHIH, Prophecy, Peter and Bolter.

I really hope we get in the future something in the vain of the rock and country influences of the album, and expand them to the whole proyect making it cohesive. I would really love something fantastically like the prophecy/ophelia but I might be in the minority there.

currently listening to showgirl for the 45th time this week and lord i'm just so in love with this album every song just hits for me except for maybe father figure and the title track and that's only because they're not that relatable to me but i still appreciate them as pieces of music.

as someone that didn't fully vibe with ttpd, showgirl is just the opposite of that vibe. a short and carefree album and that's exactly the vibe that i'm feeling right now. she said the album was bright because that's where her life was at the moment of making it and i feel her so much on that. i'm in such a happy place in my life right now and showgirl just reflects that perfectly.

Trying out a new avi for a bit to go with the returned username - celebrating the revival of country Tay but keeping a dash of Loser energy even with the discourse on here it's such a fun time to be a fan, anticipating the anniversary - I can't believe we're under two days from the 20 year mark of her career now!
