  1. kylie, all saints, shangri-las i think there are some artists where you only need the greatest hits or the playlist or whatever it used to be more common i think, a lot of artists really used to churn albums out before about the mid 90s and there was more filler on pop albums as a rule
  2. can't decide whether benson boone works or not
  3. ngl when i saw the hanging shoes it made me a bit uncomfortable but i don't think for a second any of this was intentional, no one is advertising their youth oriented product with a lynching lol

the thing it reminded me of was chappell actually - tho probably not to the same degree - the late taking off of the album, the kind of non-committal shrug about a follow up, the sense that both of them are not really aiming to be hit artists but are going to get that anyway, audrey is a bit more chill tho lol
  5. i think the best thing you can say about britney jean is that it was a very clear signal that something was very wrong with the situation around her, which then led to one last genuinely good and properly involved britney album before she retired 143 was also a clear signal that something was very wrong with katy but i can't say that there was anyone else to blame there, tho i guess once you've hit bottom you have to stop digging

the songs are not written apparently, she's just focusing on pushing the old material taking off atm
  7. this was a #1 hit but i don't think they're as well remembered as they should be
  8. i'll do this when i've listened to it a bit more (there's a lot out atm), am 3/4 of the way thru tho and i really like it i think lizzy is one of the few newer artists i listen to who isn't that easy going but there's a lot going on here, it is very joni at times but it has her own stamp on it as well
  9. tbf to miley slant never give pop albums more than a seven, i wouldn't expect them to cut her a break (i haven't heard this yet so idk even what the ATRL verdict is)
  10. lost your faith is pretty good, a bit jim steinman i think, a lot of her recent stuff has been in that kind of melodramatic vibe as well it's funny cos people drag her for being generic but actually her style is really pretty distinctive and there's not many of us who like it, she's like an indie artist already lol
  11. honestly i think pop music has hit the spot that rock hit in the late 00s, where it seemed to run out of ideas and started doubling back on itself, recycling old styles without there being much of a new centre covid feels like the split in things tho in all truth, while the 10s had quite distinct style in terms of how alt rnb and trap were dragged into mainstream music, they often made it a bit drab and boring and the only way back to brighter pop music was to start recycling the 00s, disco etc and a lot of that's been really good, i think the 20s has been a much better decade for pop music than the 10s qualitywise, but it's getting to be a bit of a sinkhole, there's not really much fwd thinking as opposed to finding new styles to recycle some people think that afrobeats, latin music and kpop is a way fwd, or at least somewhere where new ideas have come thru in the past decade, and there's something in that but idk how much of that is just that western culture is unfamiliar with these styles and they might well start to falter themselves (even camila has strayed from the latin ideal lmao) but i think there's only so far they can blend with western tastes anyway, kpop esp is already struggling because it's crossed over. i do wonder if we really have hit a wall now stylistically and its all treading water from here, the charts atm is full of old songs cos a lot of the new ones simply aren't good enough
  12. yeah she's standing guard and i can respect that, esp for moving to the sun
  13. a great bridge from her big chart period to her best material, it's good but a lot of it is about its pop cultural moment, i think the way that she uses it on manic ("yr best song is about to be a massive hit" etc) kind of acknowledges that
