I don't really think she made a deliberately bad album, but she was very intentional about why she made Showgirl the album it is. I doubt that she anticipated this level of negative reaction. She's talked in the past about how she makes her albums in response to the criticisms people have of the previous work. People complained that TTPD was too long, too boring, too much Antonoff, too wordy. So she pivoted in the complete opposite direction; short, fewer songs, all Max Martin, basic pop bops, minimal lyricism. She gave you exactly what yall asked for. You asked for **** and she gave it to you. She provided a bounty of career highs on Poets and they were not properly appreciated, so she said no more. This is why we can't have nice things.

The way I didn't care for Virgin on my first listen last year but Showgirl was so bad it made me go back and give it a second chance. Sledgehammer and Shapeshifter are so good.

Showgirl sucks, but it's not that much worse than any other album he's worked on.

Not really. Fearless, Speak Now, and evermore are underrated here. Midnights should be at least equal to reputation if not higher. Tortured Poets is significantly better than this suggests.

Taylor is to blame because the concept, theme, aesthetic of the era were her bad idea and everything is built upon that rotten foundation. Travis is to blame for being a mediocre muse. Tortured Poets haters are to blame because she has openly talked about how her projects are made in response to the criticisms of the one before. You said too many songs, she made fewer songs. You said too much Antonoff, she dumped Antonoff. You said not enough basic pop bops, she made basic pop bops. You said too wordy, too much songwriting, so she served no songwriting. She kinda forgot to make any music for people who actually like Tortured Poets—you know, her actual fans. Max Martin is to blame for being a mediocre, washed up producer who's been undeservedly overhyped for more than 20 years. He's not largely responsible for Showgirl being such an awful misfire, but he is to blame for worsening the entire genre. Pop music was better before he came along.

You can see the insecurity in the lyrics of Cleveland. She spent years in a quiet, lowkey relationship—her longest—just begging for a ring that never came. Became insecure, resentful, and desperate. Jumped into a tabloid spectacle of a relationship out of spite, got married for brand synergy and because she needed the reassurance that someone could actually want her for forever. She got married because she needed to, to prove something to herself and "win" the breakup. There's hardly anything in her songwriting about why she even likes the man she married. The only things she says about him are contrasts to how she felt with Joe—she felt alone with Joe while Travis "saved her from her loneliness," Joe was lowkey while Travis is fun, Travis fucks her better? These are anti-Joe statements, not pro-Travis ones. This does not seem like it could be the basis of a lasting relationship.
