@Dear Reader The king that you are! What a song, what a moment. Was it most pleasing in her career? Not the words I would use, but with some distance I'm happy with what ME! brings to the world.

I'm normally not interested in dunking on someone for variations of a single, because I like hearing the different mixes, but what the hell is an iTunes limited? Just a different single cover?

I understand there's a bigger conversation you're getting at, with this comment, but I'm specifically talking about my comment back to your original thought about how singles now-a-days are inflating the album's perceived consumption. My point was about the practice of not releasing the physicals of a song until months after radio play peaked to get the album sale for those who wanted to hear the single. This was very commonplace in the 90's and early 2000's before digital sales launched. Many songs you think are bonfide smashes have whack hot 100 chart runs because the inverse was happening. My point being that the billboard 200's charting has almost always been flawed, it's just taken different forms over the years. It was extremely commonplace back then to have 2 killer songs and 10 filler tracks that were not of comparable quality. For bands or artists who didn't have physicals immediately, the fans bought the album for the one song, and it would boost the albums placement, that's akin to the one song is immensely popular, thus the album moves some units phenomenon we have today.

Right, but this isn't much different from the 90's when you'd have to buy an album to listen to the one or two hit songs you knew on the album if they didn't print a single for them. There's a lot of historical album inflation on the charts that were worse than what we have now in that sense.

There was a 2009 platinum edition release of Fearless that had 6 bonus tracks. Not the TV. it opened with 109k as a deluxe released a year-ish later Other than that, TS1 opened with ~40k albums in 2006. Genuine discussion not snark: I don't think "gaming the charts" for a one week pop is a problem when the charts are supposed to reflect the songs with the most consumption each week. Songs that are gaming the system to get there won't be reflected in the Year-End charts or on the Spotify/streaming platform all time lists. Forcing something that doesn't have hit potential will only ever backfire. I think a gatekept music scene from the late 90's and early 2000's promoted a monoculture feel where more people would be familiar with the top 20 songs because of frequency of encounter. This in turn leads to our modern day issue of how we think there were more "real" hits 20 years ago, because we have more dispersion of attention than we used to, but labels have always had just as many levers to pull for radio and digital downloads, we just weren't as privy to those interactions as we are with streaming antics today.

This is not true for the US markets. Apple (31% market share) and Spotify (36% market share) are relatively competitive here. Amazon is closer to 25% and is more casual playlist driven listening, but dismissing those two services when combined they have a majority of the US market is a bonkers statement.

I like that her promotions all seem to be thoughtful tie ins to the art. Even if I'm not going to drink one, fun to see that others might experience it and tie it back to their fondness of the music when they think back on things years later.

Really impressed you took it the extra step because I was wondering if that record is within reach, something I didn't think was possible in 2020 when it would be a feat to beat Elvis' record even though it was partially spread between the chart before the BB200 Lover only having 1 week will always feel so wild in hindsight. I know it was Drake and Tool and just the climate, but it's so wild how that's almost the inflection point of her career at this point.
