I can acknowledge it was a smart single choice, but that still doesn't help me personally when I hate it as a song very deeply!

I'll give the Loser era her flowers for one thing: Loser Live from Paris is genuinely better than the original album and one of my favorite things she's ever done. The performances of Corny Street and Death By A Thousand Cats will live rent free in my mind and have a place in my library until the day I die!

Re: the wedding stuff and the current state of Taylor discourse in stan spaces like ATRL… I think one of the points of disconnect is that some of the loudest detractors genuinely feel, even if they can't articulate this, that her actions do impact their lives relatively directly. Part of that is because of the way things have changed since the last time she was visibly a little more, for lack of a better word, cringe.

When she made Lover and centered it around what are in hindsight relatively corny and forced expressions of a particular millennial flavor of social positioning, and the quality of her work perceptibly dropped as a result, she didn't stop being the woman who had written songs like All Too Well, Love Story, Dear John, and Blank Space. She didn't stop being the artist who had crafted, already, two incredibly well-loved AOTY winning albums, a self-written masterpiece, and a now retrospectively lauded magnum opus dissecting the facets of heartbreak. She was still the artist who would go on to make Folklore, Evermore, Midnights, and TTPD (the latter admittedly acclaimed more by fans, but already slowly receiving its reappraisal).

In the Showgirl era, though, things have changed. The political atmosphere is significantly different - once again global politics are dominated by Trump and ascendant right-wing movements, but things feel much more dire and fraught. Although she clearly, directly, and forcefully spoke her position when she endorsed Kamala, I think this feeling leads to many of those who think she could or should be saying more feeling more slighted. In no small part that's augmented by her billionaire status, also new since Lover; that status is very strongly driven by the valuation of her catalog at nearly a billion dollars itself, and represents a drastically different kind of wealth than that of entities like Elon Musk (not to mention smaller by several magnitudes), but nonetheless she retains a profoundly negative title and association in the minds of many because of it. Add to that the wedding allegedly turning into a little bit of a spectacle, an album that for many missed the mark in almost the exact same ways as Lover, and the rise of toxic communities like snark subs, and you have a recipe for certain individuals to sprint past reasonable criticism straight into feeling personally insulted and victimized when she does something that, to most of us, is at worst rather out of touch. I avoid a lot of direct conversation about the wedding, about other artists' relationships with her, and about similar topics specifically because I can't blame anyone for overall frustration right now, but also because it's not worth trying to change the mind of anyone who is too entrenched in a mindset that construes her as a villain to have a discussion at all.

While she remains the storied, accomplished artist who has crafted one of the most popular and enduring discographies of all time, it's just harder to see in a positive light for some people now. Whether that be because they're mired in toxic feedback loops of terminally online spaces or because they're simply older and wiser now and some of it doesn't quite sit right with them, it changes the overall discourse significantly. In real life spaces, though, she's the same as she's ever been - just less on the minds of normal everyday people than other more immediate concerns that were not so front-and-center during the Eras Tour, situated neatly in between the peak of COVID and the second Trump administration.

I've tried to make these thoughts respectful of genuine fans who don't like where her public image, music, and persona is at - I am a leftist myself and struggle with the whole billionaire thing, for instance. Hopefully I've fairly represented things and not made any fans feel their skepticism is misconstrued. One way or another, things will go back to baseline in terms of discourse, music output quality, and everything else. I wrote these thoughts all out mostly because I was bored and procrastinating lmao

Damn. Let her be wedded in peace.
