Lorde - "What Was That"

Featured Replies

Honestly production sounds pretty dated, the sample in chorus reminds me that annoying sample from Justin Bieber song Where Are Ü Now from decade ago.

the song isnt bad just mid.

she needed a more commercial pop leaning comeback single. which makes this reintroduction underwhelming.

Eh disagree about this not being commercial/ pop enough... The post-chorus was hooky,  Lorde's vocal was instantly recognizable/familiar , the part "What! Was! That!" was made to sing along to, the sound fits post-BRAT musical soundscape. This could be a cute hit.

What was that?

Baby, what was that?

Whether this was underwhelming or not, it's up to each person. Solar Power lost a lot of goodwill for Lorde, but Pure Heroine & Melodrama were such strong works that ppl still love her. I think people will be checking out the first single for sure

I heard G***** A****'s streams collapsed within the past hour after this song dropped, but I think she's going to be ok.

i think thats intentional and fits the look for the mv.

Lorde isn't the most conventional prettiest of girls (pop star wise)

The no make-up look in the video and her eye bags/wrinkles is not a look but the song is amazing. i love it

I'm gonna need time with it.. I don't love it on first listen…

WHAT WAS THAT.. oh, that's easy.. that's SONG OF THE YEAR. A CLASSIC HAS ARRIVED

Where Are Ü Now is from 2015, was this the type of videos they did in 2015?

OMG IT DOES SOUND JUST LIKE WHERE ARE U NOW

i couldnt put my finger on what other song it sounded like... but i knew it was a bieber one hehe yikes

Now that I'm analyzing the lyrics more and more, I feel like this is a conclusion letter to what Lorde left it open on "Green Light"... am I overthinking it?

I don't think I'll necessarily re-watch the video very much, and I don't even know how much I care for it, but I think it was very effective. I at least watched the whole thing through to the end, and I sort of got what she was trying to do with it artistically, and it made me think about her artistry in probably a bit more depth than I otherwise would have with just the song.

Yeah I agree. The video clearly did what it needed to do.

WAAAAAIT I THOUGHT IT WAS OUT FRIDAY NOT TODAY LEMME GO TAP IN

I have to be honest,

Lorde isn't the prettiest girl is she?

The no make-up look in the video and her eye bags/wrinkles is NOT it but the song is great.

Girl it's not too late to delete this... :rip:

Anyone else cried when watching the video? The scenes from the park felt so cathartic

The video is giving early 2000s diy vibes

did she film the video yesterday tho :deadbanana:

It looks like they did about 3/4 of the video in the last couple of weeks and then just spliced in the park scenes late at night or early in the morning before they uploaded.

especially when its extremely likely that this album is going to involve breaking gender expectations in some way :rip:

Could you all imagine how the video would be like if no one showed up at the park yesterday or the police somehow arrested her?

There could be 100 people in the park but only one of them showed up

I really think the parallels are super intentional, yeah. I'd be shocked if they're not. It's like a second take on some similar feelings, another kind of closure.
