I REMEMBER THINKING THIS IS THE BEST CIGARETTE OF MY LIFE

The way the video has practically zero budget but tells a stronger story than others that have elaborate costumes, stages/sets, extras, etc. oh

********* don't make that face

the song isnt bad just mid.

she needed a more commercial pop leaning comeback single. which makes this reintroduction underwhelming.

Does she want to do a more commercial single? Maybe not...

I'm convinced some of yall are hearing Lorde for the first time because who tf cares about commercial pop appeal with her :rip:

we already know she not a chart chaser.

I feel like she would benefit the most from a Billie like rollout with 4-5 weeks of pre orders leading up to the album with no pre release songs, something she should've done for Solar Power as well. Imo it's kinda pointless to have all the attention on a single song at this point in her career, she's an albums artist.

Why did she needed that? She doesn't care about charts since like Tennis Court :skull: I didn't like the song I mean its not bad but it was underwhelming because the snippet sounded way more promising but out of all artists she's the one that we should least expect to go on a commercial route

As a big fan of Lorde's, I am so thankful to god y'all aren't in the recording studio.

what she needed was something stronger and appealing to the masses since shes been away for 4 years. 8 years tech.

Y'all need to stop arguing in here and go stream the song, it gets so much better every listen.

Been here for every album cycle and the same discurse always happens with Lorde. People thought she was too "pop" on Green Light,  then they thought she was too "indie"/"alternative" on Solar Power, and now people think she is too "derivative" here, even though the production sounds fresh enough and distinct from Melodrama.

Out of all the artists mentioned on ATRL, she's the one that gets more flack for not being "innovative" enough even though those same people stan artists making the same beats over some little quirk here and there to pass as new and yes I will mention them: Lana, Taylor, Marina, Billie, etc. All of them have made music that very much feels derivative of their previous works several times already but somehow those artists don't do that and Lorde is the only culprit in their eyes. lol, we haven't even heard the entire album and people are already judging it before hearing it in full. People hear a synth and jump to that conclusion lmao.

E: No one is even critiquing the lyrics because they are just that good that they are resorting to clawing out any little production detail to critique. One thing about Lorde is that she will bring her penmanship to a song.
