Okay so after having this on repeat for an hour, I'm seeing visions of a brilliant playlist anchored around this song - some Melodrama, some of the Brat remix album, some pre-Fascism Grimes, some Heart Station and Bad Mode Utada, oh something is really coming together here for me :giraffe:

edit: oh and definitely some HMHAS, particularly Chihiro

Lorde isn't the most conventional prettiest of girls (pop star wise)

The no make-up look in the video and her eye bags/wrinkles is not a look but the song is amazing. i love it

It's ok to not like the song, no need to come for her looks literally sybau

Honestly production sounds pretty dated, the sample in chorus reminds me that annoying sample from Justin Bieber song Where Are Ü Now from decade ago.

Wait I kind of agree with some of this. The production needed some changes because as a result the song tries to be two different things at once and it sort of doesn't gag as well. I still like it and would rate it a 7 for now.

I am head over heels in love with this on first listen.  I don't know how she managed to make a song that simultaneously feels instant, yet like it could be a grower.  The music video feels very 2009 low-budget indie girl with the almost achromous color pastiche, and I AM LIVING.  This is everything I needed from her right now.

So if we follow tradition, the single cover is the album cover too.

I feel like she would benefit the most from a Billie like rollout with 4-5 weeks of pre orders leading up to the album with no pre release songs, something she should've done for Solar Power as well. Imo it's kinda pointless to have all the attention on a single song at this point in her career, she's an albums artist.

Yes like she should've at the very least announced the album with this single (like she done with Solar Power). I fear she's trying to chase a brat moment so we may be waiting quite a while for the album

ok yall are really about to have me switch like a sissy now and be in here straight up defending miss Ella bc the smooth brains not getting that a music video doesn't have to be some giant, expensive, bombastic production to convey the message of any given song !! WHATS NOT CLICKING, WHATS. NOT. CLICKING !!!!!

solar power criminally underrated btw, best album she's made tbh

love it :jonny: such a weird feeling to stan this woman as we're the same age and I feel like we're aging together and going through similar things

This wasn't true for PH.

ATRL not vibing with this really cements it's SOTY status lmao

The line about covering all the mirrors and not being ready to see herself yet hits so much. The lyrics overall are stellar. Love the "Step out into the street, alone in a sea", such a poetic way to describe loneliness in a crowded space.

the confused reactions from stans of musicians who couldn't write lyrics like this to save their lives :deadbanana2:

LOVE this. It's so nice to see her back doing pop (even tho I adored Solar Power). Can't wait to dance to this.

However, I will say that the Supercut-chords being used for this kinda cheapen the song for me. It feels a bit too on the nose. I know we're living in an era of artists reheating their nachos from the 2010s - which is a great and fun thing - but I didn't need such an obvious reference to Melodrama on this. Lorde is such a monumental artist, she doesn't need to self-reference like that.

Amazing song tho, hope she announces the album and tour dates soon.

i am hoping we get at a feature from charli on the new album i loved girl so confusing but my gay ass can only dream:rainbow: like i said yesterday i am keeping my opinions to myself. lyrically this is good but besides the chorus, the song itself doesn't do much for me. i am hoping this is just a promo single but i feel like this is the lead.
