Lorde - "What Was That"

Been here for every album cycle and the same discurse always happens with Lorde. People thought she was too "pop" on Green Light,  then they thought she was too "indie"/"alternative" on Solar Power, and now people think she is too "derivative" here, even though the production sounds fresh enough and distinct from Melodrama.

Out of all the artists mentioned on ATRL, she's the one that gets more flack for not being "innovative" enough even though those same people stan artists making the same beats over some little quirk here and there to pass as new and yes I will mention them: Lana, Taylor, Marina, Billie, etc. All of them have made music that very much feels derivative of their previous works several times already but somehow those artists don't do that and Lorde is the only culprit in their eyes. lol, we haven't even heard the entire album and people are already judging it before hearing it in full. People hear a synth and jump to that conclusion lmao.

or maybe the song is just mid? lol? :deadbanana2:

oh no, it sounds a bit like Melodrama, one of the best pop albums ever made! how terrible!

but seriously, this is gorgeous. exactly what I wanted and needed from her.

right? the criticism is such a stretch. anyway let me hit play again!

I ******* love the video as a fellow "lipsynch to the songs I'm listening to on headphones in public" doer

Yes!!! She's just like me for real. I have performed MANY times strutting down my street.

It definitely has very similar elements to the production of Melodrama, it's not just "synths in an upbeat song". Regardless, I agree without you. It doesn't automatically deem it a Melodrama reject.

Definitely, it have a similar industrial sound that she used in Hard Feelings for example.

But even the similar elements are used to different effect sonically.

Which is normal, she's primarily an electronic musician since her debut.

also ironic how many of those artists are inspired by lorde...

She walks by my apartment in the video SIJASIAKNSMLJAI

AMAZING song

Actually love the video, which I didn't expect after seeing the reactions before watching it. But yeah…the song is underwhelming to me…

It's better than Solar Power (single) so that's nice, but it's not better than anything on Melodrama or Pure Heroine. But it's a step enough in the right direction that I'm still excited for the album

sure grandma

It's definitely giving me Green Light, personally. This is a very high compliment - Green Light is one of the greatest recordings in music history!

Just like that song, I like it after one listen, and I think it's going to age very well. :celestial6:

Taylor, Marina and Lana get flack for this with every release. not sure why you would think otherwise. Lorde didn't even get this treatment until now? considering that SP was a clear departure and her release before that was eons ago.

lol, where have you been? Solar Power was dragged through the pits of hell for borrowing from other artists, which was a direct result of Jack working with all those artists around the same time and her being accused of "stealing" from them when the album dropped. Trust, it's not the first time it's happened. I remember it vividly. That's why I'm bringing this up because the stans of those artists salivate over the same version of their fav's songs but critique Lorde for the same thing they think she is doing.

And truth is, I like all of those artists. Their songs have definitely ended up in my top 5 in previous years and I still stream them (Lana and Taylor more than the others I mentioned), but it has to be said if they're gonna critique Lorde but praise their favs for the same thing.
