RADICAL TRUTH message, but not the greatest messenger. I think there is a pop music before and after Taylor Swift in the sense that she was able to smash while delivering…nothing. Her popularity definitely subdued what pop stardom used to look like and took it from extraordinary to ordinary. The pop stars that are serving visuals and pushing pop forward are majority indie/niche now. Is that solely her fault? Probably not but she contributes heavily to the mediocre nothingburger music that mainstream pop (sans a few artists) has become.

The Cure (and quite frankly most of FAGSIL) stomps lyrically on anything she's put out in many years, but I don't think Olivia writes from the perspective of outside noise in the way that Taylor has for many many years now which I think hinders her ability to say anything meaningful

Well at least her outputs for the last 5 years have completely deaded the idea that she's the songwriter/talent of this generation. There should never be a comparison with her and the greats ever again. But for her fans' sake I do think she needs new collaborators and people that can push her because it's quite clear nobody has done that in over 10 years. Folklore remains an inspired anomaly among this decade's worth of poor effort.

Accurate post-1989 but I think Speak Now could be a bit higher and Fearless a bit lower.

I won't be listening but she hasn't put out anything listenable in like 7 years (?) and hasn't made a pop song that sticks since like 1989. After that she's progressively gotten worse until the folklore blip and then went back to regular scheduled slop. Not that she was ever some creative genius but I don't know how anyone with ears can listen to an old song of hers vs. a new one and say there hasn't been a staggering decline

The record is so funny to me because while yes this is a big hit and felt big and viral a few months ago, it really doesn't feel like some massive event that warrants 23 weeks at #1. Radio is just ridiculous and shouldn't even be counted anymore

Because one person was one sale, and sales were an industry standard and main representation of consumption. Now sales are just representation of a collection of fans. Nobody but a diehard fan is purchasing an album in 2026 so it's just like...okay her fans turned out, cool, moving on.

Sums it up. Only her fans care, but hey, she's been cultivating an echo chamber since 2008 and has kept it that way. Even down to the music she makes and producers she chooses. I feel like people keep holding out for this artistic renaissance she'll have only because they can't comprehend the major juxtaposition between her commercial success vs. what she is/offers music, but she doesn't have the range to do any of that. When the music is as milquetoast as hers of course a Folklore is going to seem like some Ray of Light moment but there's never been anything by her that's proven she's capable outside of her limited scope. Quality hasn't dictated success for quite some time now, nor does she even care as long as she makes money.

I was just watching her MTV interview during Erotica and her talk about American repression and this was in 1992 Would be nice to see her dig her heels into society yet again.
