Was the backlash to TTPD overdone?

Taylor had somewhat of a "hate train" or pushback against TTPD for some reason, mostly citing the quality or lack of with the project, but with further inspection, this is one of the best modern day heartbreak albums of our generation, from a popstar who makes it abundantly clear that she indeed has self-awareness, but that all is fair in love and war, which is Taylor's shtick kinda, and it's pretty kunty of her, at the top of her game, to release such a bratty heartbreak album. I have to give her her 10s.

This album has a lot of great moments:

You left your typewriter at my apartment
Straight from the tortured poets department
I think some things I never say
Like, "Who uses typewriters anyway?"

:jonny:

And who's gonna know you, if not me?
I laughed in your face and said
"You're not Dylan Thomas, I'm not Patti Smith
This ain't the Chelsea Hotel, we're modern idiots"

And who's gonna hold you like me?

:jonny:

Down bad, waking up in blood
Staring at the sky, come back and pick me up
**** it if I can't have us
I might just not get up
I might stay down bad
**** i if I can't have him
Down bad
**** it if I can't have him

:jonny:

If you want to break my cold, cold heart
Just say, 'I loved you the way that you were'
If you want to tear my world apart
Just say you've always wondered

...

You said some things that I can't unabsorb
You turned me into an idea of sorts
You needed me but you needed drugs more
And I couldn't watch it happen
I changed into goddesses, villains and fools
Changed plans and lovers and outfits and rules
All to outrun my desertion of you
And you just watched it

Like whoa, what is this? Taylor was absolutely in her bag and released such a bruised beauty of an album. The hate was way overdone, these songs are immaculate and give all the melancholic drama we need. Agree?

No it was underdone.   There are 2 (TWO) listenable songs out of 30+

What backlash? A bad album being critizised for being bad? Nah

  • No, if anything critics were generous. Blondie needs to stop writing high school songs. I'm starting to think she paid Lana to ghostwrite folkmore

Fortnight & GAS

Like everything Taylor related, yes.

but I do get some of Jack criticism

isn't it just this forum and "stans"? i heard it from word of mouth and didn't see anyone disliking it

Overdone to the point that it got weird and then got super boring, yeah.

oh. some of u already ran in here :deadbanana:

Yes, especially since this came out during a very busy time of the year when many artists were releasing music. But I expect everyone to switch like f words and come back crawling to it in a few years saying it's one of her best and that they always loved it as it usually works for her music

there was no backlash outside of atrl and stan twitter

next album is a good time to switch up the sound though, obviously the album has excellent numbers but it didn't really make the same kind of mark on the cultural zeitgeist that midnights and folklore did

It's interesting how back in 2014 everyone was team Taylor until Lover.

it has some great moments but listening to the album as a whole is pretty exhausting

however most of the hate it got is bc people desperately want to see her downfall

She definitely needed to select the strongest 16 tracks and have no deluxe edition.

The amount of tracks made the era too messy and daunting to get into

It still probably top 3 worst releases by pop girls this year with Katy and Gaga. So no

I think the opposite. Releasing more tracks guarantees most listeners can pick their favorite drop of the bunch and keep them. Instead of only having 16 to choose from and chopping a few off.

I blame the title... it made people expect something that they were not going to get.

If she named it, 'Modern Idiots' or something else, half the hate would have gone away.

Like everything Taylor related, yes. [2] The way this forum reacted, you'd think the album had a 37 metacritic score or something :rip:

Hating on TTPD was also a way for a lot of non-Taylor music stans that are tired of her to cope with her omnipresence in pop culture and with the album's huge success. If the album was released by anyone other than Taylor Swift, it would not have garnered a tenth of the vitriol it got :michael:

This!!! This is one of the best moments of this album. This song is just perfect

No. It was a breath of fresh air and relief that people were not taking anything anymore just because it was made by Taylor Swift.

Taylor has made 100x better albums in the past and hearing TTPD after Folklore, Red, and 1989 feels so off. It's not a good album sonically.

I understand some of the criticisms for TTPD but not The Anthology.  Most of the latter is produced by Aaron Dessner and is basically folklore and evermore's sister.

I actually disagree. Jack shined much brighter than Aaron and the standard album is also better. The Anthology is like a lifeless and magic-less reductive version of the folkmore duo.
