It's funny you mention it because I looked at Polydor's roster like a week ago and it was entirely Interscope/Geffen artists they do distribution for in the UK + a small number of their legacy artists like Girls Aloud + nobodies. I think the only answer is UK record labels have run out of ideas and are staffed from top to bottom by incompetent people. Polydor wouldn't let Raye release anything, then she smashed as soon as she broke free from them, now they're copying the sound she went with for her second album with Skye Newman They have no idea what they're doing with any of their signed artists so just make them imitate other already established acts. Once every 5-10 years a UK record label might break through a new British artist like Dua Lipa, but other than that they are a complete waste of time and space. They're too far gone and I won't be surprised when they're all eventually subsumed by their corresponding US labels, with just one Universal label, one Sony label, and one Warner label each focussed on signing and developing UK talent.

I disagree. I'm a fan of both and there really isn't much between their voices. They are both weak vocalists and so rely on talk-singing during live performances – hell, even the studio version of The Boy Does Nothing is in that style. Alesha's voice is slightly more powerful, Cheryl's tone is slightly warmer/less tinny. I wouldn't reduce Cheryl's solo success just to X Factor and tabloid attention either. When other artists joined X Factor UK or when The Voice UK was at its peak, none of them saw anything near the same amount of success from the same/a very similar platform. And there have been countless attempts at solo careers by British former girl group members who were regularly reported on, but none matched Cheryl's success again. When X Factor was still on air, The Voice's USP was strong vocalists, but now it's the only singing talent show and having looked up some of the winners of the last few series, they definitely aren't all powerhouses. The blind auditions are only the first part of the show, after which that gimmick falls away and having star quality comes back into play.
