The production and lyrics on this album are very lifeless, to the point where Woman's World is one of my favorite tracks. My favorite song is All The Love, which would've been much better with ballad production. Gimme Gimme is not bad either. Overall a terrible album compared to Smile which seems like a 10/10 compared to 143.

The album was better than I expected, there were some really catchy parts but it seemed like there was no motivation to make something more from it.

I'm not asking that she drop a concept album, deep and thoughtful, but just a LITTLE framing would have gone a long way.

It's too bad that she didn't want to create an artistic moment for herself, instead seeming to bank that a moment would just naturally occur when/if the songs were hits. Instead, there's no artistic moment gleamed from the album, and thus it kind of goes nowhere: no hits and no purpose.

 

And as someone who was around and adult during the TD/Prism era, it's interesting to see her in this part of her career. So many icons just keep releasing music similar to their heyday without a big artistic statement and that's okay too (Nelly Furtado's release today says hello), but rarely are they staged as some big comeback, a pop event meant to return us to an era of pop we are all quite nostalgic for.


I think the solution would have been somehow to play with her image and her sound more. To not harken back to it full-force, but to use and reference it in contrast to something new and exciting from her. Instead we got lite versions of what she's already gave us. And truly, what makes you last in the industry is NOT hits but respect. For any next project she should seek that.

This could've been a cute dance-pop EP. 

 

After getting through the first four TRASH tracks, the CRUSH->LIFETIMES->ALL THE LOVE->NIRVANA run was honestly bop after bop. ARTIFICIAL wasn't too bad, and WONDER was a nice closing track. 

A 0 would be generous.

I'm down for acoustic if she can actually go back to OOTB or even TD (ballads/mid-tempos). However her ballads/mid-tempos since 2017....   If that's the best she's got lately, then she should stick to dance/mindless pop. Her best songs post Witness are upbeat songs. Only good ballad in my opinion is Miss You More and not everyone even agrees with me on that one. lol 

 

Edit: next year is TD's 15 year anniversary. Maybe we can get an acoustic re-release. It would be cute.

I feel bad for Katy. Like i said on my review pages back, the album is uninspired and not her best but it's far from being an atrocity. It's just a collection of bops without much to it, like many other pop albums.

 

If it was by any other pop girl I feel like it would be around 60-65, like C,XOXO, Feed the Beast and This is Me Now, which were considered "panned" during poptism days (and they weren't panned... actually, next to 143 they're acclaimed )

 

But Katy is always panned regardless of the material and this was kinda expected, and I still feel like they do the most with her. I wonder how she's gonna bounce back from this, cause nothing is looking good and I think there's nothing else she can do. The album will bomb in sales, there's no hits, panned among the critics and unless she's touring theaters I don't see a tour coming at all.

Okay I think having listened to it like 5 times this is her weakest most phoned in effort and all the songs sound more like snippets than actual songs 

 

I wish the songs were more fleshed out with bridges, intros, ect because right as I'm about to like a song I feel it ends.

yeah this album feels like it was manufactured in order for a certain subset of gays to call her mother at every appearance
