This album makes Smile look like "Ray of Light"

This era was doomed from the start, I don't get the "this should have been the first single" comments at all. If anything, Woman's World is probably the only song that has some kind of Katy's personality on it. But aside from Dr. Luke, the problem is that there was no way a Katy Perry album could have smashed in 2024 without a complete shift in terms of sound and image. The nostalgia effect doesn't work, especially considering there are already artists out there doing the exact same things she did 10 years ago that are WAY more relevant nowadays. Sabrina Carpenter, for example. 

The album isn't as bad as people are making it out to be. It's not great but it's not bad. 

Kim's verse and 21's intro are the absolute lowlight. It's crazy that both of these awful songs were/are considered single contenders 

There's one good thing about this , no major artist will work with dr fluke after this failure

One of the Boys has one of the lowest metacritic scores but now the same people are praising it in retrospect saying how cohesive and full of personality it is for a debut album. People complained so much about Witness to the point some reviews were more about her haircut and political campaigning and erratic interviews more than the music itself, and completely overlooked some new sounds she attempted in the album, despite the same people complaining during Prism that she doesn't try anything new. One criticism with witness was how jumbled the theme of the album is and it sounds like a mixtape, but when Smile came out with a consistent theme and sonically more cohesive landscape, the critics deemed it "safe" and called it a day. Like we can all see how she can never win the critics at this point because they've always gone to veey extreme lengths when they hear the name Katy Perry and many people are just gonna take those reviews as the end-all and dunk on her, so it's kinda pointless to expect some genuine, objective and nuanced reviews when it comes to her.

 

and I'm writing this essay WHILE I'm criticizing the laziness of the lyrical content  of this album btw. But people really need to be real when it comes to reviewing music. 

You def express all points way better then I did. We really aren't dumb, I mean in a review on 143 it has been cited completely random and out of place the pseudo-legal controversy on Lifetimes' video (in an incorrect and false way too). It's literally a vicious circle where basically hate and lies generate other negativity. The reason why true katycats are often frustrated isn't commercial success (who cares, it's really been a lifetime since Katy dominated the market), but rather it's the continuous false narrative that excludes any truthful fact or possible appreciation.

to say this isn't a Katy album is just reaching for anything to say. Crush, All the Love, Artificial, Truth and Wonder are all quintessential Katy Perry, fun pop and catchy bubble gum pop gay love, like really. 
 

this album is an easy listen through and through with plenty of gems and the more I think about it the more I realize it's the perfect representation of where Katy is in her life. Wtf were you expecting her to sing about? she's ******* happy and rich and wants to bop and shake her ass and love her child and her man.

the sequencing is great and the transitions make it a million times better. nirvana hits so much harder in the context of the album than when i play it on its own

Listened the album yesterday and to be honest i was dissapointed and i found it generic and souless exactly as people say  and i was confused why we dont have all the hits we were promised. Dr Luke really lost his midas touch. I guess all the darkness surrounding him killed his old mastership of pop music and say so was just a fluke. He's a chrysalis from his old self. Please leave katy alone dude. He's as annoying as that jack antonoff guy. Just disappear from katy life and future

This is like a Kim Petras album for katy. I also dont like the trap pop thing. Thats so 2010s. Im also done with House. All the House songs from the pop divas from the last years are so basic. Worst genre to delve if youre a pop girl. 80s influenced synthpop and disco are miles better even if theyre a bit predictable today

But wanna listen this album in a more detailed way today  i loved Witness and Smile and i have to like this one. I think it will grow on me. I like all types of Pop Music and i always find a way to  cherish every pop song out there....wait im listening crush...Oh oh those bum bum bums

I think aty really needs to move away from the dance pop-club-house-europop-dj thing. Its definitely not her sound-lane.  She makes good fun pop songs but they rock when theyre more summerish like tucked-california gurls, rock ones or like strange experiments like harleys in hawaii. She really should experiment with different genres next. We need better songwriting. Here for folky or something ethereal next or maybe something retro pin up doll doo-woop-jazzy. Dont know. 

Im still happy some fans are lovin this a lot. Dont let the haters ruin your experience. be you darling. This album was designed for the uptempo pop lovers  Even with the dark things is still a good album to bop and enjoy in the clubs or for the sexy times   not too much thought to it. Just dancing

Truth is such a waste because I actually like the chorus melody but everything else sounds so poorly written on the song. Most of these sound like they were written in 5 minutes.

My signed vinyl being pushed back... Daisies signed vinyl flashbacks and that **** NEVER showed up.
