my feelings about luke/perry aside, this album sums up the issues i have with that man's production nowadays: its too bare bones and void of any personality. the quality control is missing, and every song feels like a shell of something she's done a better job of in the past. i don't understand why katy's trying to guise this era as some 'return to form' when it's nothing of the sort…it's more like a total regression?

we all know she's been phoning it in lyrically for years, but what made teenage dream a success was the personality every song oozed whereas 143 is giving d-list zara larsson levels of faceless.

 

i'm surprised capitol thought this album was good enough to compete in a market where artists that have personality/unique songwriting povs are thriving right now. this would've been a good time for katy the songwriter to shine and offer a different perspective for once. oh well.

Love Secrets, love Red Flag. Not quite into Enemy quite yet, haven't sat with it quite enough yet, but it definitely dint click as quickly as the first two.

 

As for Katy, I'm kind diggin Crush and Nirvana. If they'd released at least one of these to radio, they could have really salvaged the era I think. I'm curious whose decision it was to go with the first two.

I dont remember much smile but HIH alone is more inspired than this. Obviously witness is better than this, she was at least experimenting and trying on that album.

I honestly don't know what's next for her, I feel bad. This is just too half-baked and phoned in after 4 years of waiting and SO much was invested in this project. 

Currently, "Artificial" and "Wonder" are the highlights for me. Unfortunately, "Nirvana" didn't quite meet my high expectations. Overall a generic but solid pop album where "Woman's World" is the only real abomination. There was no reason to put out such a soulless, mediocre album though.

I could not feel any emote or personality in her vocals until All The Love.... Yikes

So far All The Love is the only listenable song and even then it's giving a random Ava Max track 12

This person has never existed. Don't you all get it by now?  There were other, more talented people doing it for her all along. The more "involved" Katy is in her music, the cheesier and clunkier and more awkward it gets. 

 

That goes for Dr. Luke too tbh. He has never been anything special. Take a good look at the credits on Katy's first few albums — there are tons other producers involved even if Dr. Luke stamped his name first on everything. Plenty of people have spoken about Luke getting credited on productions he didn't really do, or for songwriting other people did. 

 

Now that Luke and Katy are both industry pariahs and can't get better, more talented people behind the scenes, we can see what they're really capable of.

Oh Katy I was really rooting for you... I'm so sad for her, it seems and she also sounds like she doesn't wanna be a pop star anymore. I'd rather she retired after Smile than release this career ending album.
