Nirvana were a big part of MTV when it was at its peak. MTV playing their videos was a huge part of the breakthrough of grunge music and alternative rock into the mainstream. MTV's heavy rotation of them kind of made Nirvana the band that represented the "MTV Generation", so I can see why they would get the award although the timing does feel a little random

What's crazy is that Blackout's impact and influence continues to grow over time. We have new pop girls who were three years old when it came out naming it as the most influential album to their music and several artists releasing albums and building their whole careers on sounds that are undeniably influenced by it

Both are super impactful, just in different ways. Britney's was more iconic. The visual of Britney with a snake around her is one of the most iconic images in pop music history, and it's actually kinda hard to think of another award show performance that has been referenced as much and as consistently in pop culture since or before. Gaga's was truly influential in terms of bringing theatricality back into pop music and raising the bar in terms of pop music being heavily conceptual
