With the great positions she's on Spotify's playlists (NMF), specially with GORGEOUS, and the growth of Spotify, I'm expecting better numbers than Smile, maybe 12M.

I'm surprise some people are liking Artificial  (and I like Katy and enjoy some songs of the album)

That goes for Dr. Luke too tbh. He has never been anything special. Take a good look at the credits on Katy's first few albums — there are tons other producers involved even if Dr. Luke stamped his name first on everything. Plenty of people have spoken about Luke getting credited on productions he didn't really do, or for songwriting other people did. 

 

Now that Luke and Katy are both industry pariahs and can't get better, more talented people behind the scenes, we can see what they're really capable of.

great positions on Spotify's playlists????  She has 0 songs on spotify's TTH   

No More Tears for New Years is better than almost all of this album.....

Eventhough the three previously released singles weren't very good, I was open minded listening to 143 and wanted to find a few gems.

 

I've never really been a fan of Katy's albums but I always find some songs that I really love. Even Witness and Smile have some bops that I still use today. Harleys In Hawaii is probably my favorite Katy song ever.

 

I did not enjoy 143. The three singles were probably the right choices eventhough they bombed though I did not find a single song that felt special and made me want to replay it. The whole thing isn't horrible but it is definitely her worst album to date. It felt unfinished, unoriginal and a bit childish.

 

The best song to me is probably I'm his, He's mine. The only song that I genuinely found atrocious is Gorgeous. It's a very disappointing album :/

Maybe I just have bad taste or don't care about music as much as I thought, but I really enjoyed this album  there's quite a lot of songs on here I'll be revisiting.

The way the last half of the album is better than any of the singles 

A lot of these songs feel beneath her until ALL THE LOVE->WONDER… TRUTH is meh, but I was bopping

She should have scrapped the first half of the album 

I've been listening to this album all morning and it's so, so much fun! Truth is a career highlight for sure, I really like the chorus and the "I wanna know the truth!" moment, it's somehow so catchy and satisfying 

 

Wonder makes me tear up when she sings "Stay free, little Daisy / Don't let the envious ones say that you're just a weed"... and then that EPIC bridge just really drives the point home 

 

This is one of my favorite Katy albums, hands down. Too early to rank it in her discography (until now my favorite was Smile or Prism) but it's really, really good. I'm genuinely sorry for all the people who look at the general consensus and the horrible 'professional' critics and run with what they have to say. Who cares? Whatever happened to the times when we just enjoyed music without looking at scores or chart placements? 

I enjoyed this album. "Gorgeous" is such a BOP!

I feel like there's great revisionism when it comes to Katy's peak. I was there and I remember people thinking PRISM was boring, bland, predictable and full of fillers. The reception to Roar and Uncle was also very lukewarm, at least from pop fans. Everyone was disappointed that this was what she gave after the Burning Baby Blue and funeral teasers. It's a solid/ok album to me, but I think we're kind of trying to create this narrative that there's a major creative fall from grace for Katy and I don't think that's really the case. Not directing this to you personally, just a general observation. 

Yeah people have been very revisionist when it comes to her career and they keep changing their goalposts and opinions as it suits them. I think that's one of the main reasons Katy has never been able to please a lot of people critically and she herself is confused and keeps going back to forth with what she does each album/era. And I'm not talking about commercial success here, that's an entirely different topic that's been discussed to death about how she declined commercially. But staying on topic, in terms of critical success, critics have never been completely objective when it comes to Katy and that has always influenced a lot of casual listeners to just piggyback and say harsh things about her music, half of which wasn't really warranted. I'm not saying Katy's albums have been stellar bodies of work with consistent povs. They havent, and her albums as a whole have always been a mixed bag of povs, styles, sounds and topics which have always confused the critics as to what she's actually trying to say. But the amount of harsh criticism that this woman has been subjected to every time she releases an album is just frankly very unfair. It's just so EXTREME every single time, and I'm like "am I missing something here" while similar albums by other artists have been reviewed in a much more positive note. Even Teenage Dream was shunned by them when it was released, but now the same critics and users alike praise it as being one of the best pop albums and how they want "that" Katy back. One of the Boys has one of the lowest metacritic scores but now the same people are praising it in retrospect saying how cohesive and full of personality it is for a debut album. People complained so much about Witness to the point some reviews were more about her haircut and political campaigning and erratic interviews more than the music itself, and completely overlooked some new sounds she attempted in the album, despite the same people complaining during Prism that she doesn't try anything new. One criticism with witness was how jumbled the theme of the album is and it sounds like a mixtape, but when Smile came out with a consistent theme and sonically more cohesive landscape, the critics deemed it "safe" and called it a day. Like we can all see how she can never win the critics at this point because they've always gone to veey extreme lengths when they hear the name Katy Perry and many people are just gonna take those reviews as the end-all and dunk on her, so it's kinda pointless to expect some genuine, objective and nuanced reviews when it comes to her.

 

and I'm writing this essay WHILE I'm criticizing the laziness of the lyrical content  of this album btw. But people really need to be real when it comes to reviewing music.

When will artists stop putting their singing children with autotune on their albums !

 

On another note, I'm kind of annoyed she shared snippets for basically every song. Nothing was really a surprise going in on first listen.

I don't feel guilty I just feel like I'm missing something given the extreme reactions in here.
