How does everyone feel about Beyoncé collabs?

 

I feel like a lot of the time, when she collaborates with someone big, the songs are not the greatest and a bit disappointing tbh.

 

Some examples:

1. Walk on water - Eminem's rapping is so annoying and the way there's barely any music is just so boring.

 

2. Top off & Feeling Myself - very basic songs, annoying choruses 

 

3. Kanye collabs - for me these never lived up to the hype, and didn't sound nowhere near as good as Kanye's songs back then (I do like Lift off though).

 

I really want her to do a song with Sade one day, but also a bit scared if it would live up to the expectations

I am quite fond of Travis' "Delresto (Echoes)", Kanye West's "See Me Now",  The Isley Brothers' "Make Me Say It Again, Girl", The-Dream's "Turnt", and B00TS' "Dreams"... but on a real tip: Unless your name is Chris Martin ("Hymn For The Weekend', 'Up & Up'), Missy Elliott, Jay-Z, or Frank Ocean ('Pink + White'), I feel Beyonce collabs are best when you get a chance to step into the madness and creative genius of her world. You can tell with some of the singles you mentioned above (Eminem, Ed, DJ Khaled) that she simply felt honored to be asked (or didn't want to impose on their body of work), so she didn't get all 'Virgo perfectionist' on their work. I could only imagine what "Walk On Water", "You Changed", "Say Yes", and "Perfect Duet" would be like if she truly went in to dissect them like "Savage (Remix)" or "Mi Gente (Remix)". Walls of harmonies, more dramatic bridge dynamics, maybe some opera in the distance? You never know with her. 

 

If Sade fits into her world (like Jack White, The Chicks, Tems, The Weeknd, Grace Jones, Kendrick Lamar, Miley Cyrus, Shaboozey, and Post Malone have recently), you'll get a gem.

Cuff It is such a great song to stream during the fall. I've streamed it 26 times between September and now

I've noticed that when Mathew starts talking about something in an interview, he gets caught up in the thrill of his own lie, and it gets bigger and bigger.  I had a friend in high school whose father was exactly like this, and Mathew has always reminded me of him.  I honestly don't think the man can even help it.

Really interesting question. 

 

I kinda feel the same about Bey and her collabs. 

 

I think the issue is, much as some of the Hive like to receive everything she does as this free-flowing burst of creative genius, I think Bey is super intentional with the optics of her releases. She pairs her actual brilliance with a very careful and curated collaborations that keep her "cool", left-field, and artsy.

 

There are several very obvious big collabs that we know are there if she wanted to (Bruno Mars, Rihanna, SZA, Drake pre Not Like Us, hell even Taylor Swift). Collabs that would automatically be huge successes. 

 

Instead, our girl goes the left route with acts like James Blake, Tems, etc.

 

When she goes BIG with the collabs, the songs are rarely that great. Not bad, sometimes even good, but rarely...great. And in my unsubstantiated opinion, it's a textbook case of overthinking and wilfully driving in a less-obvious direction than what the big Pop/Pop-adjacent moments are expected to be from Bey + Insert-Major-Name collabs. This goes for the Miley, Post Malone, and the terrible Eminem collab, and more. Even "good" songs like Mine, 6 Inch, and Freedom are not reflective of the scale of stars behind them uniting together.

 

In a separate but related reality, I feel the same about when she works with "obvious" hitmakers of the time. 

 

For example, I don't know how Bey gets a Pretty Hurts while Rihanna gets Diamonds...from the same Sia. 

 

I've made peace with all of this, but I would like to hope the stars align for a: big collab, that's great, and is pushed properly (within reason)

It isn't a Bey issue. Big collabs rarely work, which is why they're so great when they do.

 

Taylor Swift x Sabrina Carpenter. Two of the biggest stars on the planet right now. The song? Not great.

Mariah Carey x Ariana a few years ago. Everyone was waiting with bated breath. The song? Not great.

Doja Cat x Nicki. A blatant attempt for Nicki to get a number one. The song? Worse than "not great."

 

I'd say Savage Remix is better than all of those, and I wouldn't say Bey did that so she'd "look artsy." Nor would I say she jumped on a Coldplay song for cool points. She has to be aware that their image is like... the opposite of cool. But she did it because she liked the song, and she likes Coldplay regardless of what everyone else thinks.

 

I said something a few weeks ago about her having nothing to reclaim when it came to rock music, but I wasn't thinking of rock 'n' roll. Loving this free promo she's getting this past week.

Oh we all know that if it was Bey or any other POC selling 50 variants and breaking such records, the industry would've already come up with restrictive laws to block that. Tale as old as history
