Is Taylor's backlash valid?

The OP wasn't asking if she was flopping. The question was whether the backlash was warranted because of the drop in her output quality, yet you decided to focus entirely on charts and stats

Because regardless of the echo chamber Taylor's career is going to be fine? That's why I said it. I also like Showgirl and have never pretended otherwise. Yes Taylor regardless of the echo chamber "backlash" will be fine.

  • Yes, her horrible music needs to stop. How on earth do you make folklore and then all of this crap?

  • And will all that matter in 5, 10, 20, 50 years? Absolutely not. What will matter is how people remember her, and right now that's looking like talentless hack who got a cult to buy her **** music 738

  • Taylor sold 4 million units in a week and is sending a deluxe re-release single to number 1, her career is fine regardless of the EPs critical reception or Twitter/ATRLs echo chamber. She's going to d

I mean..I think it's pretty hard for her to lose in something
So when she does, it does matter

I guess set the standards high for herself

The backlash over these specific 4 songs is not valid because they're mostly fine. Their 'badness' is being exaggerated because of an accumulated Taylor fatigue, which is extremely valid because she's a below-mediocre artist who's been releasing bad music in huge quantities for too long.

I blame The Tortured Vinyl Factories. No one needed 35 new Taylor songs in 24 hours.

We have been here before in 2012 and 2016-17. It is par for the course whenever you are a female artists who achieves a certain level of success.

What it's giving is that a lot of people are waking up to the fact Taylor's music was never all that anyway and now they're making up for the overpraising of her music by critiquing her with the same energy. She already released ME! before this year and yet sites like Pitchfork still acted like she was the queen of music anyway. That's why I can't take that site seriously with the Taylor criticism. People are trying to overcorrect and it's funny to watch.

She's a capitalist queen with nothing interesting to say, songs that sound like they were written during 5th grade recess, a horrible singing voice and an enormous ego. Yes she deserves all the backlash.

She just happens to be a VERY astute business woman who knows how to get her fans to support anything she puts out. Once they move on, sis is COOKED.

It's valid to certain extend, especially when part of it is truth. She can release as much as she wants but it's obvious that that will compromise the quality of her work which is already showing in her latest releases michael

Her only real musical miss to me is Showgirl. Midnights and TTPD are both solid albums, even if the latter has some filler. The problem is the attention she's obsessed with drawing on herself. People are tired of her, she knows it, and all she needed to do after Eras/TTPD was take an average sized break between album cycles and come back with something that would shut people up. She did the exact opposite of that and put a bigger target on her own back. So yes, it's valid.

The backlash about her insipid, unmelodious songs? Yes, deserved. The backlash about her variants when most people's faves are also greedy? Stupid.

the life of a showgirl simply pales in comparison to literally every album she ever put out, even debut. it is what it is.

She will be remembered for hit songs like You Belong With Me, Love Story, All Too Well, Blank Space, Style. Her legacy is well-cemented already, 1 not so well-received era does not take away from that.

You could say that about literally any pop star. The longer you are in your career the more you rely on your established fanbase. Taylor did the best job of cultivating one.

And people have been waiting for her fanbase to "move on" from her since 2009. Like it's not going to happen. Anything to cope I guess since that's what has happened to their own faves.

Yes it matters, she has lost credibility over the last year

She is in a very strange position because she will be one of the biggest commercial artists of all time

But examples like The Beatles, Michael Jackson, Prince, Madonna etc have immaculate discographies

And tbh Taylor only has Folklore and Evermore to compete with the rest of artists having those insane highs

She is at the top because of pure commercial success without the artistic credibility to back it up

Her future is very interesting

No bc it's not constructive criticism. Losers just love to hop on a hate bandwagon and make memeable posts for an ounce of clout while normal people will hear once and check out if they're not feeling the music. Like why are you so bothered that an artist you don't like makes music... you don't like??!?

Her Swifties will buy her stuff no matter what.

But the GP is done. Her peers don't respect her unless it's for the cameras or they need a quick online attention boost. The critics seem to be done lying too.

As a fan of Taylor, I think the backlash is both valid and completely over the top. Yes, she deserves criticism for her recent music. The Life of a Showgirl and The Encore have been really disappointing, and neither feels like the Taylor who made albums I could put on repeat for months. But the level of hate she gets goes far beyond fair criticism. A lot of it has little to do with the music and more to do with her being one of the most visible people on the planet.

I also think coming back so quickly after the Eras Tour and TTPD was a mistake. Releasing that much material in such a short window meant the public never got a chance to miss her. Even people who used to love her seem tired, and honestly I get it. Constant rollouts, variants, and re-releases make it hard for anything to feel special.

Most of all, the music itself makes it obvious she isn't feeling creatively inspired right now. Lately it seems like she's releasing because she can, not because she has something to say. That's a fair thing to call out, but it doesn't justify the pile-on.

Red is extremely well-regarded also outside of her fanbase and there is a case to be made for 1989 too. You guys act like TTPD and Showgirl are her only albums ahh

This is how I know you're an OTH who pretends to be a fan. Imagine summing up Taylor's entire career to just FolkMore as if Red, Fearless, Speak Now, and TTPD won't be remembered.

Yes! i love her but she needs to release good music again.

Red is definitely a great album, but one of the best all time? I don't know honestly, never seen people really praise it as a GOAT

1989 definitely not, it was a decent pop album but not GOAT
