I think they overcorrected from the 2024 algorithm + autoplay. But it's also just a natural consequence of modernity and music consumption. Never before in history have people had access to music like this. Social media can also cause any song, made throughout human history, to go viral. No one listens to radio anymore. Radio used to cast songs away over time to make room for new hits. Social media has no curation. Anything and everything can go viral and stay viral.

They stopped the fraudulent autoplay and payola from previous years

The numbers are incredibly low for everybody.

Everyone's exploring older or more indie catalogs.

Chart numbers are lower than ever yet userbase numbers are higher than ever. Make it make sense

Did they really stop the fraudulent autoplay? BOAF is still heavily autoplayed.

these are just not strong hits and it's okay to say that. just last year we had ordinary, golden and the fate of ophelia doing 7m-9m streams daily for weeks upon weeks.

I used to work for a record label in Canada and I remember one specific meeting being so depressing because the general conclusion the director had at that time was that: only repertoire has value going forward. None of the new songs will ever achieve that level of interest, success and value.

Meaning that if you were active before the 2020s, whatever you release today will never trump whatever was released 10-20-30 years ago.

New music has no value. It seems the audiences agree.

This is the correct answer. The industry used to be able to control it so most of what we heard on the radio was the new music they want us to consume.

But now I can open TikTok and randomly get hooked on a song from 2001 because people are using it on edits of my favorite movie etc.

New music sucks.

I believe people discovering the one that got away really sparked a trend

People are now streaming whatever they want or what's viral on social media instead of the songs pushed by Spotify. I remember around 2024 there were many posts about the same songs being played after any type of music and all of these songs are considered mega hits and has a lot of streams.

I switched to youtube music and a lot others too. Only losers use spotify now to boast numbers about their faves
