Did 143 help or harm Katy?

Featured Replies

On the one hand, 143 arguably cemented every negative narrative around Katy and turned her into an internet punchline.

On the other hand, did it actually reset expectations? It feels like people are judging Watch It Burn on its own merits instead of expecting another Teenage Dream.

Would Katy be in a better place today if 143 had never happened, or did she need to hit rock bottom before people were willing to give her another chance? Discuss.

the album was so bad, people started listening to an old TD track so it helped her in a sense

It hurt her to the point where people really don't care to give her another chance.

I feel the track still would have done well because everyone is obsessed with the early 2010s music revival now

I think it tanked any legitimate chance she had to turn the ship around. Even if the next album is excellent and revitalizes interest in her, whether through a new sound entirely or a Confessions II style return to her older work, there's a permanent ceiling on what success she'll be realistically able to achieve as a result of 143 being perceived as her shamelessly crawling back to Dr. Luke just to make an album that was almost universally panned anyway.

It helped her off a cliff when she was peering over the edge.

Should have been her Confessions II moment but she picked the wrong producer and the music was bad, she is now a throwback songstress

It really destroyed her career and any other chance to comeback.

Both 'Witness' and 'Smile' were flop albums but nobody expected Katy to flop that BAD (Meghan Trainor level of flop).

It was her 1 chance to make people listen to her again, and she seized that opportunity by releasing a shallow song about feminism produced by the guy that raped one of her peers

It would be very hard for Katy to have a 'CONFESSIONS II' moment, 'Teenage Dream' is her timeless album and she has been reheating it so bad many times already meanwhile that Madonna album was one of many impactful albums she already released in her career (it was her 10th album after 2 decades of music).

The album itself isn't as terrible as people try to make it, it's just bland and uninspired with few tracks that actually have potencial, however everything was tarnished by Luke's involvement. It was actually building up to something, specially after the cover for Woman's World dropped, but everything went downhill after the first snipped, so it was all over in one week basically. rip

It harmed her to the general public, but for her fans that already liked her it was pretty much just a dud with some highlights.

The worst part is that the album is so gorgeous visually, it was her best looking record imo. For all I care it was worth it just for the pictures alone. rip I'm gonna pretend this is just a photobook.

It helped occupy the Little Monsters for a one sided decade long "feud" so I'm glad they have something to do.

the animated art for 143 and 1432 eats

Obviously harm. Regardless of her previous flops, there was expectations of her finally bouncing back, now people simply don't care to even give her a chance

Her career was already pretty much finished, but 143 erased any doubt that she is beyond over. It was the final kiss of death.

How? pretty sure I've seen good numbers from Never Really Over and the Hawaii song, despite it being a flop album. The One That Got Away and Legendary Lovers did good this year too.

She's ruining her career but there's still chance for a Believe / We Belong Together moment.

Never heard the album and don't want to either. I think what's harmed her career is her lack of ability to try new things, reinvent her sound, etc.
