Katy Perry - '143'

Featured Replies

I'm still in disbelief at how bothered people get by katy perry in 2024. I read some pages in here and the dramatics over this release are just :deadbanana: To me she's in a similar position as nelly furtdado is. Where are the 2681162818 threads and laments over her new album? Anyways

I quite liked it. It's very consistent all throughout unlike most of her previous albums, even if it doesn't reach the heights of Prism or Smile for example. Gorgeous through Nirvana is the best sequencing she's ever done on a record tbh. And I love that she played into her bimbo side with this, I've always wanted a record like that from her.

But while I do like the base of what they have here and the sound she was going for, I wish they would've gone all in with these songs instead of the minimal approach they took. Bridges, more lyrics, adlibs and key changes would've made this a much better album. Walking On Air, Birthday and even Dark Horse are so rich in quirky details like that, what happened to that?

Crush, I'm His He's Mine and Nirvana is my trinity. Gorgeous, All The Love and Lifetimes will be on repeat too. Artificial doesn't quite hit the mark for me, and I expected to like Wonder more than I did.

Woman's World is the lamest song, should't have been here. Replace it with When I'm Gone as the opener and this makes for a more pleasurable listening experience.

It's a 7/10 for me if you do that switch. 6 with woman's world :cm:

I mean does she have better albums? Sure. Is it not as passionate as something like Witness? I suppose.. But acting like it's terrible all around is seriously pushing it. There are good elements to the album as well.

I feel like many people listen to the album with the intention to hate it because of the narrative surrounding it and the media scrutiny influencing many of you. But if you listen to this album with a open mind it's really not half as bad as people make it seem.

Are there moments or elements that are fine? Sure, but none of them come together enough to deliver even once decent song as a whole.

It's pretty obvious a lot of people made up their mind on the album even before WW even came out, but Katy has been looked down upon by the media for years now and it never stopped some of us. Those who were on the website for years can easily recall how I was hyping up parts of Smile. Even that damn Electric song y'all hate for some reason. This just has nothing I can click with it, it doesn't even try.

Alright I finished. It was okay, not some terrible turd people were making it out to be. I give it a 4.5/10.

My favorite songs (in tracklist order) are "I'm His, He's Mine," "Crush," "Lifetimes," and "Truth" :jamming: The two real duds are "Gimme Gimme" and "Gorgeous." The rest of the songs were all okay, more so because they had potential in them and I could hear it but then they just flatline, namely "All the Love" and "Nirvana." "Artificial" was way too short. "Wonder" specifically is a little hard to judge because of its theme… it's cute but sonically feels like it was just meant for Daisy to hear (or a parent to play to their toddler). I'll listen to that bonus song some other time. I did like the transitions and the album did feel cohesive.

After a few more listens, the production is actually quite polished.

I think it would've done so much better if she and her label delayed the release after Woman's World, scrapped it from the record, and removed Luke from all writing credits, and just paid him under the stable (which is still wrong).

I don't think they could've done that though. I think the vinyls had probably already been printed and the VMAs and Rock In Rio were already set in stone. The schedule was fixed.

But what I'm saying is — I think her brand image has been SO  damaged that it's making the music sound worse than it is. We're all thinking, "ew…flop" before even pressing play.

I think it'll age better than how it's being received now. In 30 years time, when gay teenagers on ATRL are discussing how successful 'Teenage Dream' was, some of them will look into her discography, like we all do with Madonna, Kylie and Cher's discographies, and I think they'll enjoy '143' more than anyone here right now is.

What are we gonna enjoy? The vacation-medication and kitty kitty lyrics?

What an interesting development. ATRLers wants to give Witness it's flowers, when as recent of a month ago ATRLers were calling Witness, one of the worst albums produced by an MPG. Why the Sudden Change of Heart I Wonder?

Witness was always a decent to good album. People act like it wasn't because it flopped commercially. The user base here needs to move past sales translating to quality of output.

Oh WOW , i cant believe how bad this is ( for my taste )

I wonder is she stuck in a timeloop in 2013 ?

I hope you guys enjoy it 😉

yea. i cant get into this. gonna listen more tonight and tomorrow during my workout. I really want to like this. nothing less... i'm gonna give her my streams.

I'm one of those people who believe Katy peaked artistically with One Of The Boys so idk if 143 is even for me :lakitu: i dont hate it on first listen it's just kind of forgettable? Going to play it like three/four times to see if things grow on me.

Going to raise my previous score from a 3/10 to a 5/10

Okay but it's wild how the worst song on the album according to the general consensus is the one Max Martin touched. Truly food for thought here.

I'm shocked at how well ATRL's servers are handling this.

I just saw her in the hotel :jonny::heart2:  she is so beautiful, she served black long hair and skinny body :alexz: I love her

I finally listen to the entire album :jonny5:

1. Womans World - I still like the song, I dont get the hate, however yes there are better songs for lead single.

2. Gimme Gimme - i liked  it but Katy told me it was a new Dark Horse, i get why she said that but the production is more minimalistic.

3. Gorgeous - this was :flame: its dark, fun, Kim sounds amazing, one of my faves of the album

4. Im His Hes Mine - The amout of times I listen this week to this BOP, can her stupid team stop prettending this song does not exist, it deserves to be a hit.

5. Crush - is a perfect pop song :alexz:

6. Lifetimes - JUSTICE FOR THIS MASTERPIECE!

7. All The Love - it remind me a lot something from Teenage Dream or Prism :WAP:

8. Nirvana - the production, Katy voice, lycrics.... I SEE A POTENTIAL BIG HIT, IT MUST BE A SINGLE.

9. Artificial - I love it, is dark & experimental but still dance song, JID sounds great. :clap3:

10. Truth - this is the only song that feels kind of meehhh, it not bad but nothing special

11. Wonder - This was magical, cute, & perfect to close the album   love it

Overall is very good album, is POp, is Dance, is fun, is perfect 11 songs, nice collabs, just have fun, all songs are from the same world, Katy delivered a very good album very cohesive.

YESS KATY I WILL BE SUPPORTING THIS ERA, YOU DESERVE IT

The album is not as bad as you are all saying it is lmao. The melodies and choruses arent the problem at ALL here. MOST of the album is fantasic in that regard. Its the production thats the problem (kind of).

Anyway, there are smashes on this album

- Crush (smash)

- All The Love (smash)

- I'm His He's Mine (smash)

- Artificial (weird but it works)

- Nirvana (the drop is TERRIBLE though :( )

- Wonder

- Gorgeous (bop)

I'll reserve the rest for now

As per usual, she put the WORST singles out at the first two singles, so ******* dumb

Completely agree and have the same notes haha

I don't understand why people say Gimme Gimme is Dark Horse 2.0, Artificial sounds way more like DH than that for me.

How many Espresso clones are we going to have? 0? Katy needs to pull through and make a copycat Chappell Roan or Sabrina Carpenter song.

Ew no that's gonna make it so transparent that she's trying really hard and make it seem like she's competing with much younger girls. Those 2 in particular are clearly fans and very influenced by her. So let's not. Thank you and 143.

After giving the album a few spins, this would be my preference.

Woman's World

Crush

I'm His He's Mine

On initial listen, Crush was one of my favorites. But after a few listens, it reminds me too much of **** Pop Miami, and it feels like an instrumental reject from that repacked for this effort and the lyrics contain "la da da dee" which was used the song right before. Additionally, the melody of the chorus reminds me of a Kelly Clarkson song.

I actually have grown to rather like Daisy's part in Wonder. It's quite cute.

I'm kind of mad at how much I like Gimme Gimme, because I am not really a fan of 21 Savage - but even his additions to this song, I enjoyed.

Woman's World is still not something I would say I like, but if I completely ignore the lyrics, I do find the melody very catchy in combination with the production.

143 is a very solid 7 and very much feels like a summertime album.

"Gorgeous" probably should have been the lead followed by "I'm His, He's Mine" (and I dislike how "Crush" has a similar "La la de de" chorus).

Overall a fun listen, critics are doing way too much.

Luke and his minions have truly perfected their sterile pop sound (which I like a lot), but I feel like that sound works a lot better with Kim than it does with Katy :gaycat6:

Wonder is genuinely the only good song in the album for me nnn

It has that bombastic chorus that pop stans are yearning for Katy, and it's the only song that has a bridge and outro to perfectly close the track instead of looping the chorus until the end of the song just to reach the 3-minute mark :skull:

Cirkut really is the best pop producer currently working today :clap3:

my thots as someone who quite liked Katy and enjoyed most of Smile

Woman's World – :suburban: 3/10

Gimme Gimme – from the snippet I thought I'd hate it more than I do. Lyrics are awful but it's listenable. 5/10

Gorgeous – clearly a Kim reject. Katy is a pop legend, this is beneath her. 3/10

I'm His He's Mine – Doechii is great. Again not as bad as it seemed from the snippet. Might've done ok if it was the first or second single. 5.5/10

Crush – my favourite snippet and has a few interesting moments but it's too predictable and dated. 6/10

Lifetimes – I have an extreme aversion to 2015 Love Island background music. 2/10

All The Love – Prism chop but it's not unpleasant to listen to. 6/10

Nirvana – has 2013 written all over it. 5/10

Artificial – verses are bad but I kinda liked the chorus and JID's verse was ok. Again sounds like something that's been rotting on Puke's hard drive for a decade. 4.5/10

Truth – ngl I didn't make it to the end of this one, it's so bland and the chorus is irritating. 2/10

Wonder – it's giving 2013 Avicii filler/last place in Melodifestivalen. Diabolical lyrics and vocal production – she sounds so shrill :redface:2/10

I love Katy's voice, I think it was made to sing all kinds of Pop music. But this just feels like a return to form gone wrong, she tries to go places but she's halfway there most of the time, if not all the time. My top 5 is I'm His, He's Mine, All The Love, Wonder, Gimme Gimme and Lifetimes... which grew on me a lot after hearing the album fully.

But yeah, this is a 4/10 for me and my takeaway is that working with Dr. Luke didn't pay off at all. I understand he was a key part of the successful chunk of her career but this album proves she never needed him.

I actually enjoyed it!

the singles choices were awful, WW and  Lifetimes are the ones I don't really care

On my second listen and this album is pure fun. Will need more time to decide where it sits in her Discography but loving it so far
