The interesting thing I find about the whole Prince thing and sexuality is that it's based on him being feminine. However, many gay men in other contexts push back by saying gay men aren't all feminine. Straight women say men should embrace their femininity as it's one way to break the patriarchal structure. But when a guy is feminine he is accused of being gay. Which implies straight men can't be feminine. As long as femininity in men is linked to homosexuality society and gender roles can't change.

I actually fully support what you're saying, but in Prince's case, it would have faired better if he just didn't care? His remarks and sexualizing of women was borderline if not absolutely performative? and let's not give him too much credit when "fem" men was very much in style through late 60's into the lates 70's, maybe he was just taking advantage then? good points tho

I always think about how we've literally regressed as a society on gender expression because back then they had Prince, David Bowie, George Michael, etc that were marketed as straight with lots of feminine traits.

Now modern society including GAY MEN perpetuate ignorance about any male artist like Shawn Mendes being gay for simply having a slight lisp in his voice effectively boxing gay men as a stereotype

There's a difference between having feminine traits such as liking romantic comedies or having a big interest in make-up, for example, and downright acting feminine.

I have seen many straight men who aren't closeted or bi do the first thing but I have never met someone who does #2 and is wholeheartedly straight.

It might not have started their either. There are many rumors about him. He remains a legend but I do think he was closeted and hateful because he couldn't be who he wanted to be.

Valid but Shawn having a lisp. I thought it was hand gestures and his voice that made people speculate. Either way, Prince had issues to sort out inside so him lashing out to be homophobic shouldn't be shocking.

Because he was effeminate and self hating. I believe Michael was in denial too. At least Bowie said he was bisexual
