Worst second single choices for an era?

Featured Replies

Tinashe releasing Pretend when All Hands On Deck was right there, I love Pretend but second single?? I dont think so.

Katy Perry releasing Uncle (a beautiful song) as the second single from Prism was also a bit wtf

Mariah Carey releasing Bye Bye as the second single from E=MC² as a We Belong Together and it underperforming rip

I'm sorry, but I don't like Cyndi Lauper's choice of second single for the True Colors album.

"Change of Heart" peaked at #3 on the Billboard Hot 100 after the lead single, "True Colors," peaked at #1.

But I think "Calm Inside the Storm" should have been the second single. It was never released as a single, which is a shame because it's one of her best songs, in my opinion.

Unconditionally.

Uncle over Legendary Lovers and Ear Terror over Harleys is insane.

Tinashe completely ruined Aquarius by forcing Pretend out when the label wanted Feels Like Vegas. She's had a lot of label issues, but this was the one time they were COMPLETELY right and she was utterly wrong. skull

Hilary Duff's 2004 self-titled (there wasn't a second official single despite being a commercial success rip)

no wonder they never trusted her opinions after this. Pretend was the worst single choice off the album.

AHOD, FLV, how many times, Bet (shorted version) or thug cry would be made better singles that that song.

Lowkey a bop but shouldn't have been the follow up to SBP

Sometimes I wonder if Ava'd career trajectory would've been different if she went with a different single not wasting the momentum she had in 2018-2019

When Billboard proclaimed Bye Bye would be Mariah's 19th #1 ...it peaked at #19

Britney's Perfume. Not that Britney Jean as a whole had much potential, but the fact that work ***** when top 12 and perfume couldn't even cross 70 says it all. The canceled/edited video is also to blame.

Kesha - C'mon, from Warrior. I love the song, but Supernatural or Thinking of You was right there.

I like this song, but it was so weird to have a bonus track (walmart exclusive before reissued) to be the second single

bad example, Bye bye is an amazing Mariah song.

Uncle is kinda a cult classic and Dark Horse dark horsing, in the end she got a smash hit and a cult classic. Its a win win

Oh she was not holding anything back in this video rip

Mega-bop but she should've sent with Dance Again, Let Me Get Me, or Souvenir

Bye Bye - E=MC²

Einstein could have and should have become a 2-3xP album in the US with this singles run:

  1. TMB

  2. Migrate

  3. Side Effects

  4. For The Record

  5. I'll Be Lovin' U Long Time

  6. I'm That Chick

  7. Bye Bye

lots of good examples here

no oneʻs posted this yet.... skull an album full of potential hits and the label (diddy) chose this ballad. Itʻs not a bad song, but...

you need to calm down as the second single from lover. but also that entire single run in general was really bad 😭

that album so desperately needed a run of

  1. Cruel Summer

  2. I Think He Knows

  3. The Man

  4. Lover

  5. Afterglow

Christina - You Lost Me on Bionic when Woohoo was right there.

Taylor - YNTCD. Cruel Summer, Cornelia Street, or Lover all would've been better options.

Britney - Toxic - not because it's a bad single choice, but because it should've been the lead.

Gaga - DWUW… we all know why.

Katy - Small Talk stalled any momentum she'd been building from Never Really Over. By the time we got around to Smile it was already doa.

Gaga - Disease because she made us wait for the perfection that is Abracadabra. rofl/s

I mean, Lover was a masterclass in how to have one of the worst single runs of all time.

I think this was originally pushed as the second single (released digitally before the album, performed at MTV movie awards) and it didn't do anything

For Toxic, I would agree if the VMAs performance with Madonna didn't happen or if MATM didn't feature her but it was all anyone could talk about at that time so it made sense in as the lead in that context
