With wrinkle-free R&B grooves, heaps of syrupy ballads, and all sorts of other cliché-ridden songwriting nonsense, Mariah Carey is once again trying to jump aboard the train of her former success. But that train has long since left the station, as The Emancipation of Mimi demonstrates. Mimi, of course, is Mariah herself. Until now, only her closest friends knew this nickname. But with the train pulling away, all sorts of things have to be pressed into service to keep the sales machine running, including the public display of supposed personal growth. That also means bringing out the tried-and-tested diva scandals. The leading lady is evidently striving for a place of honor in the Diva Olympics. Heralding this ambition are 30 bulging suitcases and an entourage of a hundred people. The latter are responsible for Madame Mimi's well-being, which suffers a severe blow whenever the red carpet intended to protect her ten-million-dollar feet from the dirt of the street isn't rolled out in time. Whether such extravagant diva antics are part of the emancipation process is open to debate. All this posturing, however, cannot conceal the heart of the matter: Mimi is further than ever from her former status as a significant R&B artist. Neither highly decorated producers nor hired mini-gangsters can change that. In the obligatory rap interludes, Twista ("One and Only"), Snoop Dogg ("Say Somethin'"), and Nelly ("To the Floor") compete to outdo one another. "It's Like That" at least scores points for a reasonably original hook. But by "We Belong Together," the flow of ideas has already dried up. From "Mine Again" onward, the songwriting clichés become downright unbearable. Sorry, but nowadays songwriting computers churn out this kind of cliché-soaked material by the truckload. It's a shame, really, because Ms. Carey can still sing, even if her voice no longer seems quite as powerful and full-bodied as it once was. The production team underpins the whole thing with perfectly serviceable grooves and overblown sound design. But even that can't turn bad songs into good ones. Without exception, every track on the album sounds like generic R&B noodling. It's pleasant enough, of course, but nowhere near enough for a comeback. Strictly speaking, it's not even enough for a tiny little comeback.

That score was ridiculous to begin with. The LA Times said that the album failed to revitalize Mariah's career. How tone deaf at the time. Rolling Stone said the album lacked hooks. LOL. Some of these reviews were still trapped in the 2001 backlash moment and could not see past it and review the album in its own right. Can I ask, what the word "impact" means to you and how it relates to COADF?
