August 6Aug 6 Popular Post comment_29673692 I have been thinking about this a lot the last little bit, and I think now's a good time to bring it up considering another thread on the subject (albeit this time about a different celebrity) has come up. I think the forum may need to have a little reckoning with the way it approaches the topic of eating disorders and anorexia. It started with Ariana and has ballooned up into a huge thing, and the same thing is now coming up in that Sombr thread. I completely understand that this is a topic that is returning to prominence in culture at the moment. But I am also understanding more and more by watching the conversations unfold here that many people on this forum don't really know how to engage with these subjects in a careful way. Not necessarily from a malicious standpoint (though I do think some folks have been malicious with it), but because I think there's a general lack of proper education on eating disorders among people and they try and use what they know of them from movies, tv, and cultural osmosis as talking points when the reality is that those are not good, informative, educational depictions of these extremely complex illnesses. But, most importantly, across the Ariana threads and now in the Sombr thread, we have users who are openly indicating that they too have suffered or continue to suffer with eating disorders. I myself struggle with disordered eating (not under-eating in my case, rather over-eating). And it has really sort of sunk in to me that all of these conversations happening on this forum that see a ton of people with no real knowledge or education on the subject matter of eating disorders parroting a bunch of misinformation or, even worse, being just straight up nasty about the subject could be potentially dangerous. People with eating disorders, both lighter and more extreme, are often very easily triggered and I cannot help but feel that the tone that these conversations have taken on as of late are getting into territory that could do just that. I think some people have started crossing that line from concern to condemnation and demonization. I think some people are at a point of now of talking about these disorders as moral failings rather than what they are: illnesses. I'm in the Sombr thread watching @MissedTheTrain discuss with a user (rightly) that these topics are not black and white and simple. And they're right. They're not. But people are discussing them on here in very black and white and simple ways. And I think it's gotten out of hand to the point that I am actually really concerned for the users on this forum who are also dealing with disordered eating reading it and seeing how their peers--and make no mistake, as much time as we spend in this community, these people are all of our peers--are discussing the subject of their illness. I'm not saying that there should be like...a banning of the subject (not yet anyway...we're sort of approaching territory where I think that may need to be put on the table though), but I would like to maybe see some sort of come to jesus meeting on this forum about the way these things are discussed. Some of the things getting said are just damaging, pure and simple. And I promise you as big as this community is, people are reading it that don't need to be seeing those comments. I don't know, I'd like to hear from others on it I guess. But currently, I'm growing increasingly uncomfortable with the way this subject is handled on this forum and what some users are being allowed to say. Like I said, not all of it is malicious. I think a lot of it is purely a lack of proper education and understanding of the presentation, symptoms, and complexities of eating disorders. But even non-malicious harmful commentary is still harmful commentary. This is rambling, I know. But it's just weighing heavier on my mind the more time goes on. Believe me my concern doesn't come from a place of believing mods aren't being proactive when it comes to blatant nastiness. I think my concern is when it comes to things that are not so much nasty or out of pocket, but more so I guess reflective of a lack of proper understanding for how these things work? It's not a conscious, malicious decision on these people's parts to say things that are potentially harmful should the wrong person read them, and as such it's much more difficult to moderate. But it does pose a danger all the same. After thinking on it some, I wanted to ask this: is there any way to build into the site maybe trigger tags? I've seen this on some other forums where if a thread deals with a potentially sensitive or triggering subject, there's a tag that can be put on it to alert people to this immediately. Even if it can't, maybe in the title? I don't know if ATRL has any specific guidelines around this, and if you do that's my apologies for not knowing. But maybe it wouldn't be so bad to have threads that deal with things like eating disorders, or self-harm, or suicide, even if it's just a thread discussing a celebrity who has died via a potentially triggering method to require some sort of clearly marked trigger warning in the title or with a tag? That way people who may end up getting triggered by a subject or how people may speak about said subject have an ample warning before they ever enter a thread. I know I've entered threads before and found myself confronted by triggering material by surprise because nothing about the title necessarily indicated what'd be in there. I don't know if there's a way to do that, or if it's something users would even go for or push back on. But I just thought I'd ask because i imagine if it's been on my mind, it's been on other's minds too. August 6Aug 6 Author ATRL Administrator comment_29673757 People don’t always express their opinions in articulate ways. People are also allowed to have bad opinions that don’t cross the line or break the rules. That’s the balance that comes with managing a community of this size.
