@hausofbryan made this come into my mind and i felt like typing up an essay

Rant: ARTPOP was always going to suffer as an era

Gaga crammed so much content into her space in the zeitgeist since debút that the GP got fatigued

And since Lana debúted in 2012 she created a counter-culture to the maximalist art-pop electronic sound of Gaga, which meant the media landscape was less receptive to ARTPOP

From Gaga herself, she had also crammed so manny different ideas into her prior eras that she'd essentially ran out of clear concepts, which is why ARTPOP tried to be a more general meta-commentary of "art's in pop culture in me", which made for a weak premise and made her look pretentious and try-hard to a fatigued public

And the music itself wasn't exactly a worthy reflection of the concept, because Gaga (IMO) didn't go hard enough in being experimental

Not to mention a certain collab with * *****

Understandably (post-C2C as a first escape) Joanne was a hard pivot to a more stripped back image and a more grounded concept (her family) and it began the long process of gaining the public's respect back for her talent and artistry, and Mayhem reminded everyone what made her so great

But ARTPOP did have an overarching theme: addiction. She just made the mistake of giving the album a title that felt so pretentious and disconnected to what she was actually doing, and then doing the whole imagery related to actual art instead of the I&V photoshoot that had more to do with the actual songs.

I don't know, I always thought the album should have been called "OD" or "Overdose" instead, as it's all over the place but everything leads back to her addictions at the time. Then you have a clear narrative with the singles. Applause being addiction to fame. Sexxx Dreams being addiction to sex. DWUW being addiction to validation. Songs like Manicure, Dope and MJH would help drive the narrative of the album forward. "If fame had an IV baby could I bare" feels like more of a catchphrase than "we could belong together".

Don't think it's confirmed but I have been hearing about it for months now!

FIFA song should be released next month or in April (based on previous years' releases)

DWP2 + the soundtrack premieres on May 1.

Two new songs (at least) in 2.5 months.

(Ofc, if the FIFA song rumours are true)

Very interesting observation! I agree that would've been a much more compelling theme

I hope the World Cup song rumors aren't true, usually the theme songs are extremely generic in order to appeal to the most basic crowd, and it's not even guaranteed that it would be a hit cause when was the last time it happened, Shakira in 2014 (kinda)? But it could be great exposure for her catalog I guess.

But there will be a new classic by then angelo

Just finished reading the CTTR Kworb thread, the way Liddos were trying to defend Trashcanne as if it was an ASIB-level achievement toofunny3 if only we knew what was in store for us

ARTPOP was a contractual obligation and she nearly killed herself trying to stabilize her career after the BTWB cancellation and losing her team. The album did fine, the music is great, the tour made up her obligation to live nation and then some, we got more looks than most other eras combined, she was on every tv station on planet earth, etc.

Her career was always going to nosedive given the circumstances and people need to stop living in 2015 where we were gaslit into thinking ARTPOP was an unmitigated disaster. 2 top 10s, 9th best selling album of the year, and a $100m arena tour are all huge successes that basically anybody else would kill to have, with or without career ending injuries, backlash, or changes in management. The only acts this wouldn't be huge for have fraudulent kpop'd numbers.

Applause + GUY videos

artRAVE, artRAVE, Roseland, Swinefest, Jingle Ball, SXSW, The Muppets Special

VMAs, AMAs, SNL, GMA, X Factor, Graham Norton, Music Station, SMAP collab, Alan Carr, Sukkiri, The Voice, Tonight Show, Late show, Howard Stern

This isn't including anything from c2c or the start of her tributes era, or that she gave some of her best and most widely references interviews during this era.

There were a lot of missed opportunities and scrapped plans but she put her head down and worked her ass off to deliver us a ton of content.

Gaga #10 on the IFPI list proves once and for all that Abracadabra and Mayhem combined were bigger than DWAS and APT combined in terms of revenue since Bruno is N/A. Delicious!

Actually stanning through ARTPOP, it was a mess and I was just grateful she never had a Britney moment publicly. She was at her worst mentally, she literally was grinding with R Kelly on SNL, filmed a music video she couldn't even dare to release with another creep, and had a very rocky breakup with her manager at the very start during the YT Music Awards.

I am glad she can celebrate the era now with Applause and have fun. But also.. it was a rough time for her and fans alike.

(And she wasn't on every TV show. I vividly recall months of blackouts randomly during the era as things fell apart and being pressed since DWUW was falling down the charts rip I don't blame her, I blame her toxic team at the time, but doesn't mean it didn't happen.)

Trashcanne was musically a disaster, but looking at the CTTR Kworb thread reminded me how lucky we are that it was moderately successful on its own terms. Solo top 10, 200k opening, decent iKoons performance, well received SB, JWT, an AMA and restoration of some goodwill with the GP, thank god we don't have a true Britney Jean or Bionic era

Just read some of my comments from an unarchived 2017 ATRL thread about Million Reasons having a mid-off with Katy's first bomb lead single on iTunes, when I tell you sisters I was out here in the trenches

Makes sense. She has 4 nights there so she can film all of them and take the best parts of each.

The press was on her ass but the music and content around the music and the performance of the music were all good or great.
