I think it was a victim of outdated album promotion tactics and having to have a pre-release lead single than then led to a promotional single and then led to a second single and so on. If she wanted this to be the face of the album she should have released it with other songs and debuted them live with that mini tour she did in bars that got streamed. Perfect Illusion, Diamond Heart and Sinner's Prayer/Dancin In Circles being available at the same time and the album vision becoming clearer, plus the non-commercial nature of Perfect Illusion being excused as it wouldn't have been the traditional lead single for her would have worked out better. That and not going with the dead aunt naming would have improved the era.
