Indeed.

I know country music isn't something a lot of people like around here but I do and I have to say that Megan Moroney always sounds bad live. Every award show performance she has ever done has been off-pitch and her voice is just so monotone.

She sounded rough at last month's CMAs. I think it's the only performance that wasn't uploaded to YouTube.

Selena, Addison & Taylor come to mind instantly. They've all got bops, but they just can't sing sorry. Taylor I really noticed it when Christmas Tree Farm came on the other day, it was almost grating.

I saw Kris Kristofferson in concert and own many of his records. He wasn't technically proficient, but I enjoy his gravelly voice.ย

Taylor swift is the first person that comes to mind when I think of pop stars who can't sing.

Well Whitney's vocal decline was directly the result of lifestyle choices (the robustness of her instrument is actually why it didn't break down sooner), and Mariah's vocal decline was the result of lifestyle choices and unaddressed medical problems (nodules on her vocal chords stemming from childhood).

That's not exactly true. Their declines are quite similar. Whitney's technique changed pretty heavily in the 90s and she stopped taking care of her instrument as well due to the aforementioned lifestyle choices and overuse.ย

and yes, Mariah's was a medical condition exacerbated by lifestyle, overuse, lack of sleep, stress/mental health (sometimes the #1 impact on vocals). She went days on end without sleeping sometimes and that will absolutely destroy a voice. The thing is that she was on the road to nearly full recovery after the Charmbracelet era but again entered a period of overuse and poor lifestyle during TEOM era. I guess it was the trade off for the comeback, but that sealed the deal despite some strong periods later on (2009, 2012-2014, 2016, 2018). She can still sing well when sticking to a lower register (as evidenced by recent fully live performances of Play That Song), but her voice is a shadow of her prime era.

"went on to" as if Madonna has done anything noteworthy since this pictureย :suburban:

I think people are confusing singing with vocally talented.

ย

Taylor Swift definitely can sing, and using her debut/Fearless eras when she was younger than 20 is just stupid. She's not a Whitney Houston level vocalist, and that's okay - because not everyone is a Whitney Houston level vocalist.

ย

Taylor's voice in all of her TS version re-release album sounds like dying goats. That's why I keep listening to the original (Scooter version)

My post offered very condensed reasoning as to why their respective instruments declined, so I can see how the resultant oversimplification would read a little weird, but fundamentally, what you said lines up with what I said.

ย

I'll add that Whitney never really took great care of her instrument, she just became even more careless.

Addison, but I think she's getting better and finding her voice. ย

ย

Now Taylor might not be a powerhouse (and she was pretty rough at the beginning of her career) but she can sing fine these days :michael:ย

Katy Perry, Rihanna, Taylor Swift, Selena Gomez, Addison Rae, Avril Lavigne, Cheryl Cole, Hilary Duff, Charli XCX. You can love their music as I also do, but these objectively range from meh to dogshit vocalists.ย

These two aren't meh nor are they dogshit

Inconsistent yes

They are more performers than vocalists.

Very few of your faves could sing the variety of genres with the emotion, growl, power and vulnerability that Madonna has and does, just a simple fact. That's a true talented vocalist to me, not who can shout the loudest, do the most runs or put on a faux broadway voice.ย
ย

Alanis, Annie Lennox and Cyndi Lauper have these voices as well, and are also overlooked when people talk about great singers, because those who scream and shout (not Britney) get all the attention.

Agree with you. Whitney also was very emotional in her way of singing.

She doesnยดt need to prove or do anything noteworthy, what she did in the past, all singers combined didn`t do anything to compare.... She is the definition of pop.
