CONFESSIONS II

Off One Step Away

I was surprised to see the mixed reception for this one... and then I wasn't. Further proof of a deep generational chasm that divides ATRL into two camps; the thirtysomething pop sophisticates with 15 to 20 years of top-shelf pop consumption to their name, and an unruly kid crew with Tate McRae avatars and tributes to Olivia Rodrigo in their signatures. It's not that the latter generation is a lost cause entirely, but they've clearly never heard a "Madonna" — that is, they've never encountered a voice quite as distinctive as Madonna's. "But I know Madonna! Rebel Heart was the first album I bought!" First off, ask for a refund. And no, you don't know Madonna, you know a very stilted and subdued version of the iconic performer. The Madonna of "Bring Your Love" is Madonna as Madonna is intended to sound. She very skillfully vacillates between a range of tones; she nasally, then guttural, then grainy, then nasally again, then delicate. (And yes, that's how she's supposed to do it.) She's sultry. She's goofy. She's sounds slightly absurd. She's fully engaged. She's expressive in ways that "technically superior" vocalists just aren't. She is brilliant. You have no idea how brilliant she is. This is the probably purest attempt Madonna has made to harness some of that ineffable charm that made her early work so irresistible. I adore it.

Because they genuinely believe another pop girl's flop will somehow make Katy's collapsing career look less embarrassing by comparison . After all these years, they still don't get it. The awful music was only part of the problem. Katy was dragged because she desperately chose to work with her former friend's alleged rapist in a shameless attempt to resurrect her career and still managed to flop harder than ever. On top of being talentless, Katy has no integrity. No matter how poorly Miley sells, I can't imagine her ever stooping that low. She released a harmless album produced by her boyfriend vs. Katy collaborated with an alleged sexual abuser to try to score a hit. Bass Persuades had mixed reviews vs. 143 is literally the worst-reviewed album of all time by a female artist on Metacritic. Miley remains a talented, multiple-time Grammy winner vs. Katy is nothing of the sort. They are not the same.

So deserved! 20 years after Hannah Montana she's still #1. Congrats, legend Miley

She practically invented this show the first time it aired in 1984, making her infamous debut in her white wedding gown as the scandalous floor-humping bride in "Like a Virgin." That performance did wonders for her, but even bigger wonders for the VMAs — it's the moment this event has always aspired to match ever since. It established her as the once and future queen of this show. So the stakes were high for her hotly anticipated return Sunday night. But her amazing performance with Sabrina Carpenter and Charli XCX stole the show, with a medley of "One Step Away," "Bring Your Love," and "Danceteria," from her recent Confessions II. It wasn't just the highlight of the night; it was one of the most stunning performances in the entire history of the VMAs, hands down. Give Madonna a few minutes of live MTV and she'll always find a way to seize the moment. But this performance — especially the "Danceteria" half — was so emotional, so deeply personal, so elegiac, yet without sacrificing any of the disco sleaze or body-electric jubilation. It felt like she set out to tell the entire Madonna story in just a few minutes. Do you agree, ATRL? Billboard staff ranks the Best VMAs Performances of All-Time. Do you agree, ATRL? #1 Madonna, "Vogue" (1990) Talk about a cross-century mashup: Madonna and her company of dancers, clad in 18th century Marie Antoinette garb, taught the world how to vogue, a performance style popularized in underground LGBTQ dance clubs in '80s New York City. Cue one incredibly animated pants-less dancer, and VMAs magic is made. #2 Michael Jackson, Medley (1995) #3 Bon Jovi, "Livin' On a Prayer"/ "Wanted Dead or Alive" (1989) #4 Beyoncé, 'Lemonade' Medley (2016) #5 Lady Gaga, "Paparazzi" (2009) #6 Britney Spears, "I'm A Slave 4 U" (2001) #7 Missy Elliott, Medley (2019) #8 Beyoncé, "Love on Top" (2011) #9 Eminem, "The Real Slim Shady"/ "The Way I Am" (2000) #10 Madonna, Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera & Missy Elliott – "Like A Virgin" / "Hollywood" (2003) #11 Kendrick Lamar, "DNA." / "Humble."
