To be fair, Speak Now was an underperformance compared to Fearless, especially with the singles. That's why going pop was the best decision she could've taken; if she remained country her success would've faded away, especially with all those MAGA radio stations.

Sometimes when I see these confessions, I wonder if I'll be doing the same to TLOAS in a couple years. It's quite humbling.

On that note regarding the tendency to switch on Taylor albums it is sorta funny to me that people essentially say, "TLOAS is the worst album ever released…except for TFOO, ET, Opalite, Father Figure, Ruin The Friendship, and the title track!" Mama, that's half the album.

Has there ever been a Rihanna album with 50% great music? A Gaga album with that much since the Obama administration?

It is probably the worst Taylor album, but the delusional online hatred around her definitely oversold the quality drop. She's released 5 studio albums in six year. 3 are universally acclaimed masterpieces yielding 3 AOTY noms and 2 wins. One was lukewarm critically, but yielded an additional AOTY nom and is beloved by the fans with a legacy that improves daily. People acted like the sky was falling because she released an album where half the tracks are solid/excellent and half the tracks are filler. Still a better ratio than the vast majority of pop girls.

It also gave her her biggest chart and global hit ever and her best performing second single since Blank Space. I hope this internet hate-mania around her let some mentally ill people get their feelings out and people can be more normal about the next one.

TLOAS has never been a bad album but super underwhelming knowing what she is capable of (after 11 albums prior)

I still listen to it regularely tho, its a fun and short listen AND I already feel a little nostalgic for it

i don't really think it's the worst taylor album - maybe 3/4 of it is great, the weaker tracks aren't terrible and it rarely drags for long - but i do think she's fallen into the trap of it being just another taylor album. going back to max i think was as much of a mistake as sticking with jack would have been and it's time for her to make a bolder move

the last time she trod water like this was maybe on lover, which is similarly ill remembered but has a very long afterlife. but it's not just TTPD that was greeted halfheartedly: a lot of people online went after midnights without giving it a chance, evermore's "folklore: the b sides" pedigree did it no favours, lets not get started on reputation etc etc

honestly in my time as someone who pays attention to taylor swift (since maybe 2019 onwards), i find it hard to remember an album aside from folklore (which plays to the critical/online gallery more than most) where there wasn't a big constituency coming after her for one reason or another. it's very hard to get the measure of anything when the world insists on being so weird about it as a default position

TLOAS only has two bad songs (Eldest Medonster and CASTRATED!), unfortunately one of them ranks among the worst songs in her entire discography
