Its inarguable that Madonna is owed basically the concept/visual experience we get to enjoy in today's pop music ecosystem. But what about the soundscape? Who is the most impactful? I'd like to think its Mariah given basically every pop female (and we all know females really run pop music) is in some way shape or form derivative of her, whether its her vocal stacking that we've seen through the decades from Brandy to Christina to Ariana, melismas, the staccato interspersed with big vocals (Beyonce does this all the time), or her very inspired hip-hop slash pop production which we find in so many r&b girls and Fantasy ft. Billie occupies a very lofi bass boosted atmospheric pop soundscape With Olivia youre always going to hear a piano, guitar, drum pad and maybe an overly compressed synth. Very pop rockstar. Chappell Roan is also sonically very all over the place but she has a very 80s synthpop with a flair of Cranberries to her sound. Dreamy beats. With Sabrina though especially her post breakout discography (2023-) you pick among her singles youre never gonna get the same thing. Her first viral smash is an Ariana tribute song, followed by a pure pop Katy esque song, then a tropical summer banger followed by a country midtempo then a pop with a tingle of rock single then an r&b single. With MBF its the same thing, a country lead then a disco 2nd single with a 3rd 80s new jack swing track. The point is Sabrina lacks a coherent sound but has very tight branding and lyricism. Do you think her vocal delivery and tongue and cheekness is what sets her apart and not the sound of her songs given how diverse her singles are?
