I think this discourse is interesting because it highlights a weakness I think that has plagued Taylor since post reputation. Taylors style of writing has always carried well into pop but its clear as day she has a much easier time writing hooks for guitar driven midtempos and ballads that is very often tied to country/indie. It was very apparent early on that when she had no inspired and coherent soundscape and production to work with, her writing in pure pop kinda gets all over the place. The only pop albums where I think she truly shined writing wise were Midnights, 1989 and rep, the albums where she tries a little bit of everything like in Showgirl and Lover, where she goes from this funky pop sound to doing a Christmas tribute song like Opalite (and even Cleveland!) or how she does jazz and country on Lover. It becomes all over the place. Shes at her best writing wise when her production is consistent as well imo and I think thats why Showgirl is so bad… she did not have a clear vision for what the album was supposed to sound like, just '12 really good pop songs' ???

yeah i have to agree now, she ran out of the juice after ttpd (theres at least 10 outstanding songs on the full double album that i could tell it was an inspired move) this talk singy verbose style shes doing now to serve the narrative at the expense of the melody is so badddd

pink clouding and patient zero are highlights on showgirl as a whole though! ophelia, opalite, pink clouding and patient zero would've been a great singles run!

this was so... bleh i keep hyping her up only to serve these mid ass songs (except Pink Smashing thats a bawp!!!) TTPD was a way better album. Fortnight was a banger and I will always stand by it Ophelia is pop perfection though i'll give her that. If yall wanna hear more Pink Clouding (banger!) listen to Day and Night by princess of pop CRJ!

As a genuinely huge fan of hers this was genuinely so disappointing. Pink Clouding is cute but when you have Carly releasing Day and Night just days prior which is basically an album full of it with way better writing and production… Yeah I get the creativity and critical lashings. She deserves it.

i think thats partly why taylor swift as a character we, the general audience, follow, works so well, is because all her 180 image shifts have always come at the behest of the narrative around her. he gets kind of annoying but Swiftologist has always said it best: Taylor Swift is the most consistent and easy to follow character in the pop culture universe. No matter how stark her image change is, its always driven by a narrative that contextually makes sense. She always remains proud of even her most critically panned work, because she's always been a writer, and always will be one. Regardless of how much she course corrects or 'learns' from her mistakes, her albums have always been hers and she's always worn them with pride, which is why The Eras Tour was such a smash. She OWNED the f*ck out of each and every single one of her album cycles!

All in all I dont think this epidemic of straight women bs will end anytime soon because on an individual basis there is no pressure for them outside of social media to come face to face with this reality. The only way and time this thinking will be forced out is when the time and generation of men (regardless of sexuality) comes where they will no longer be raised to be pressured to settle with women ASAP, to be in relationships, to be hypersexual (men are encouraged at a v young age with or without their consent to be sexually aware, hypersexualized even) to objectify women and themselves, where they are allowed to be fully formed self actualized individuals independent of female affection and the pressures of the patriarchy. Only then will these women be forced to come to terms with their backwards way of thinking because by that point, there will be little to no incentive for men to date women who will play into their patriarchal gender roles when they themselves have already freed themselves from it. Were seeing it now slow and steady with the cohort of Gen Alpha and I cant wait to see the next generation of fully actualized men and women. On another side note, yes the patriarchy oppresses women and men on a structural level are at fault for it. But on a microscopic individualized scale, it oppresses men too in different ways. Ask your avg gay on ATRL how many times theyve been pressured to date girls, to sleep with them, to be stoic, to stop being 'so extra', to be a 'real man' and pursue xyz manly interests. These individual experiences all shape the structural foundation of how men still continue to oppress women and the faster we get it out as a societal ill the faster we can address issues like this with straight women (that is a trickle down effect of the patriarchy)

(look at all the discourse around 'who gon be the boys?' memes on tiktok started by women, it reeks of internalized misogyny too) most straight women are only liberal up until their relationship with men are put into question. then they want tradwife gender role bullcrap.
