Seriously though, Circuit and Andrew have amazing instincts when it comes to production and their breakdowns/use of instruments and melodies on Mayhem are super, super strong… they also worked on Danceteria for Madonna's new record and that's an excellent track.

I didn't think Taylor would branch to new talent out for her next project but I'd be thrilled to be proven wrong.

As someone who mostly uses the TVs (minus 1989 and the Red pop singles), I really doubt I'll use debut TV at all for this reason. I'm interested as an academic might be interested to hear her vastly improved vocals, but I ain't listening to Our Song without twang lol

Speak Now and Fearless don't bother me because though albums are already more pop/soft rock than country to my ear. Debut needs it.

I'm actually really interested because of the times she's performed debut songs as secret songs. Teardrops on my guitar during red tour had me floored. I'm hopeful it's an amazing alternate version because those melodies are so strong

Good point! I had Our Song during the Red tour (literally prayed to a god I don't believe in on the way to the show that she would play it). It was incredible.

have p much finished my tay discog relisten, and after a long period of uncertainty and ambiguity to this prompt, i think i have a good idea on how i would generally rate/rank tay's albums.........

most of these are not necessarily fixed into a certain spot (besides 6 and the bottom 3), but my ideas are:

1-5. her greatest albums, any of these could to some extent justifiably be argued as her opus and i wouldn't flinch. from l-r in the image for my personal preference, but i can also see folkmore girlies having red/1989 there despite being more uptempo and pop. i'm not 100% on whether folklore or evermore is better 😭. these are all 8.0s AT LEAST

6. speak now. imo her first album that is truly impressive, the upgrade in balladry between fearless and this is insane. i just find it a schoche below the top 5, but still super strong. like a 7.6-7.9

7-9. these 3 are all pretty great, but either have notable issues or have simply been outclassed atp. just not her greatest work, which is fair! i would say these are like 7.2-7.5 territory

10/11. lover/taylor swift. still not BAD albums, but easily not in any argument as her bests. imo lover has egregious fat but still a better overall quality including album cuts than debut, so i put it above, but debut is still cute!! like 6.5-6.9s

12. showgirl. i tried for a second to consider if maybe the more mature and elevated highlights of showgirl could, perhaps, thwart the highs of debut enough that the album's shortcomings wouldn't bring it to the very bottom. unfortunately, the albums flaws are just too egregious to ignore, and she lands here. and i like showgirl more than most ppl i'd say!! i would say she's like a 5.2-5.5 - the only album in taylor's discography that i would truly consider a failure in its mission/concept

With the lens that she's truly madly deeply in love with Travis Kelce, showgirl makes so much more sense to me today.

Could've been a classic! She kinda fumbled the release.

opalite is as good a single as she's released this decade, a potential alltimer and transatlantic #1, will be fondly remembered when the smoke clears from this album (am old enough to remember when TTPD was seen as an abomination)

Jail! Robin has such a unique topic for a song and never leaves my eyes dry. Possibly her most underrated song imo, along with I Almost Do and Epiphany
