Obviously, gun violence has been a major topic of conversation, especially today. I'm making this thread because it seems timely, not to be insensitive. 

 

Many of us are anti-gun for good reason, but even the majority of liberals believe that gun ownership can be a good thing so long that gun control measures are implemented properly. I've even seen a few left-leaning people on ATRL recently encouraging queer people to start owning guns, given the violent rhetoric being spewed against us from the (largely gun-owning) far-right. 

 

Do you own a gun? Why or why not? Have recent events made you consider owning one more or less?

 

Added distinctive poll options for American and non-American ATRLers, as I figured it might be interesting to see if there are any major discrepancies given the ease of access of guns to Americans and their generally more-relaxed attitude toward guns. 

 

Personally, I'm American and do not own a gun. But given the re-election of Trump and the Neo-Nazis he's dined with and allowed to enter the White House, as a gay man I am strongly considering getting one for self-defense. If I had a husband or child, I'd absolutely get one.

as much as I hate to admit that Amy Schumer has a point, she made several. Where I live a lot of people acquire guns illegally, no one really gives a f here so I would like to own one eventually for my own protection.

No and I in believe gun control but I'm not American and can't blame certain demographics for carrying in the states. 

 

If you're a vulnerable person in a state who is vehemently against who you are (black trans women in Republican state for example) I think you should consider ensuring your safety until tighter gun restrictions are in place. 

 

Slightly off topic but the rules here in England for self defence are also atrocious… A lot of what most countries would tell you to have as a means of self defence are just completely illegal here. Can't carry tasers, stun guns, or even pepper spray.
