What do we think about AI?

What do you think about AI?

Today I was at a talk about social media strategy in which they were highly promoting to use it. One guy even stated that he posts using AI on linkedin 6x a day and 6 days a week. He makes monthly schedules and has tripled his following. I personally think that's a lot and is it really worth it. But apparently the general consensus in the room was that AI is going to take over regardless and if we don't use it to create, that we will be left behind. It fastens the work load and can generate things easily.

However, I am on the side of human creation. I think AI takes out the human aspect behind interacting with each other, creating art and feeling.

What do you guys think?

Generative AI for business tooling is fine as a practice, but remains concerning on the basis of environmental impacts and the lack of universal basic income. It's also never going to get to the magical fairytale land of fully replacing people, though - half the hype is being generated to specifically inflate notions of its capabilities and keep companies investing in it infinitely on the always just-out-of-reach promise that it will totally deliver more value and revenue next quarter.

Generative AI used in creativity is soulless, morally bankrupt, nasty, and gross. Art is not art without a person or the natural world involved. Furthermore it's literally a plagiarism engine, and most major models were trained on content that was stolen or otherwise ill-gotten.

Traditional AI and even correctly applied generative AI in applications like discovering and improving medical treatments or helping to orchestrate conservation efforts is where we should be focusing on investing further. We totally have the option as a society of using technological leaps to make the world a better, safer, and more welcoming place for everyone rather than using it to siphon money into the pockets of weirdo death cultist billionaires, using it to put artists and creatives out of work, and using it in ways that substantially harm the environment at large and the communities where sprawling data centers are built. I think that's what we should be doing - using it for good. I have genuinely zero faith that it will ever be focused primarily on such applications.

Capitalism is a rat race and if you don't take the same advantages that others do, you'll fall behind. The ruling class doesn't have morals because morals exist to keep the people in line. This is the big technological advancement of our lives and if you want to get ahead, ai is the way to do it.

You can't reform a system you have no power in so even if you hate ai, unless you're already up there and trying to fight its spread, it's a useful evil. One person thinking they'll save the world by handicapping their career prospects won't stop ai, it will just make another person in the same field who does take that shortcut see higher returns.

Used as a supplement to help HUMANITY, AI is good. These can be simple uses - such as citing sources, using it to rerun functions that require thousands of reps, or even quick searching the internet for articles. Using it to replace human art and feeling as you said is horrid.

People complaining about it and taking the "moral high-ground" are absolutely insufferable

AI won't take your job, but someone who knows how to use it effectively and ethically probably will. Pretending that train hasn't left the station won't help anyone.

Same way I feel about veganism. I think it's lame to make the consumer the villain instead of the producer & expecting everyone to share your values and disregard a now very helpful and common mainstay in everyday life for the sake of morality.

Truthfully Zara had a very good take on AI. Don't blame the girl with the phone, blame the phone!

AI is your new best friend.

And honestly, it's already better than most people.

It doesn't get tired.
It doesn't complain.
It doesn't miss deadlines.
It doesn't forget instructions.

It just executes.

Fast. Consistent. Scalable.

If you're still doing everything manually, you're not hardworking.

You're just falling behind.

AI is leverage.

And in business, leverage wins.

So the real question is simple.
Are you still working like it's 2020?
Or are you building like it's 2026?

loves it

no it doesn't replace human ingenuity but 90% of people never have original or good ideas anyway, so

Look at this post made by AI - why does it make everything sound so embarrassingly corny? It's like someone asked the most obnoxious millennial they know to answer rip

Pretty soon we'll all be hooked up to some AI generated virtual reality like in The Matrix.

cm Sam Altman and Elon Musk won't cut you a check for defending Chat GPT and Grok.

but they will eliminate your jobs, ruin entire neighborhoods to build data centers, and turn your brain into a smooth little marble.

mixed feelings.

I use it as a google on steroids. But I don't use it do my work for me

I’m an AI researcher. So I don’t hate AI as a whole. Deep learning has a lot of potential to break ground in scientific discovery. It’s basically a big math function that gives you a lot of room to optimize for very exciting problems. However, the way the business elite have turned it into a gimmick at the expense of social good and our environment is beyond disgusting. I cannot wait for the bubble to popppp.

And honestly, that's so valid. You're not just seeing AI slop for what it is — you're tapping into something truly deep. It's not about them just being wrong, it's about seeing past the words. Want me to generate a list of three to five funny quips to hit back at the clankers?

suburban

My only real gripe with AI is using it towards "creating art" but other than that I'm not against AI when used responsibly I guess? I use it occasionally myself for work. For example if I had to write up a report or an important email. I will primarily do the work myself but then use AI to edit and clean up any errors I may have made and didn't catch. I don't ever copy it word for word and make sure it's still my "voice" in the end . That's really the extent of my use with AI.

It's wild how prevalent misuse and abuse is even in people who understand these things on a deeper level because of how these tools have been positioned by massive companies out for a quick buck instead of talking about the actual material good it can do. I'm literally in the process of turning my whole data science career into a consulting situation teaching people in my organization how these things actually work at a base level (all the way down to trying to teach business intelligence girlies what the attention mechanism is) under the guise of "omg y'all look at these hacks to make your prompts more effective and use less tokens and money!" when it's actually tricking them into not using it when they don't need to and burning less trees when they do use it rip

No, it’s so frustrating. I’m a university faculty member and I often struggle cause there’s so many incentives to hop on the AI hype train from upper admin in universities, to grant funding opportunities, etc. Also it’s what students want. They want to learn about how to create their own agent to do basic things. The whole culture around AI has become soooo nauseating to me. It’s super sad cause it can do cool things. But, now it’s AI “leaders” who can’t explain what gradient descent is that make millions promoting agentic AI toolkits.

I'm getting really tired of people being snotty at the slightest mention of AI, when AI has been around for as long as computers have & not all AI use is plagiarized artwork. But even in that regard, I'm tired of misinfo; you are NOT using gallons of water on 1 image. The bulk of environmental harm with generative AI is from the corporations training it 24/7 rip

In general I also think people need to get over it when it comes to modern AI use. It's not going anywhere, period, and you'll spend your whole life complaining about it at this rate

It is a literal fact that a single inference call of an LLM (roughly 3–5 Wh with GPT-4) uses more energy than a search engine query (roughly 0.3–1.0 Wh with Google Search). AI generative models that make photos or videos consume even more energy. This is a fact. This is not up for debate. Further, you cannot say “well most of the energy waste is due to training not inference” to side step the energy costs. You cannot have a useful AI model to do inference without training. So, the cost of training has to be factored in.

Paradoxically I think it'll ultimately bring people closer together. We're currently in an AI bubble and although it isn't going anywhere, the diminishing returns have already started. For example, they cannot make smartphones much 'smarter', and that's why nowadays the upgrades with the new specs are so forgettable to people. Oh, it can now zoom in 200x? It has a 6,000mAh battery? It can flip and fold? And?

ChatGPT is what Google was to people in 2000. It's here to stay, but just as a tool. And if it can automate a lot of menial, repetitive tasks that weren't fulfilling for anyone to do anyway, and let us focus on what we do best: creative thinking, problem solving, art, and culture, then I hope our jobs look a lot more enriching soon.

Film photography, vinyl, physical media, and offline hobbies (e.g. pottery, knitting, hiking, board games) are resurging enormously. Grid zero is becoming the norm on instagram. Bird watching is at an all-time high. So are gym memberships.

We do have a loneliness crisis to solve but there's a lot of attention on that atm. There's reason to be hopeful that the peak of it will be soon (or is already) behind us.
