Having one alt cover is chic. This trend of gradually rolling out alt covers in the weeks leading up to an album release is tired and just feels like a cash grab to me.

why does this matter? pick your favorite and move on?

people wanna be mad about everything lol

only if the artist can sell them :dies:  when Rina Sawayama did 15+ variants for Hold The Girl it was ok

She only pressed one alternate cover though

if i like an album enough to buy it on vinyl, i would rather have different photos to choose from instead of 1 that might be fugly. no one is making anyone buy more than 1

I personally like it better how the cover for physicals used to stay the same, but the vinyl color changed. Alt covers are fine for physicals, but it does feel like a cheap gimmick when you start doing D2C digital exclusive covers on your site for $4.99.

Not as excessive as the constant think pieces on everything

I don't mind it. Sometimes standard edition covers are ugly and I'd prefer something a little different. It offers variety. I respect some fans will buy each variant and then it becomes a bit tactical, but that aside, it doesn't bother me.

The only irritating thing about alternative cover art is all the annoying discourse surrounding it

Is this truely the things y'all worry about?  There are people dying.

Variants are the equivalent of sports, anime, Pokemon etc trading cards, Buy them, dont buy them, no need to get your panties in a wad over it.

No they are fun. keep em coming!

People overestimate how much these musicians actually care about their cover art in the first place.

It's like non football fans complaining about football jerseys. Alternative covers are so fun for fans and collectors, if you don't like them then it's not for you so just stfu and move on

The people saying, 'Does it really matter?' or 'Is it that deep?' are probably stans of an artist who drops five alt covers per rollout.:rip:

OT: Yes it is. At some point it just becomes a cheap tactic to boost numbers.

It messes with my ocd and I prefer having one main visual to represent an album, but this has been a thing for literal decades

I loved seeing all the artists doing other covers for Urban Outfitters even before my fav started doing multiple covers, now what? What a nonsense.

I wish that album covers were treated more definitively than they are nowadays.

Now that there's this expectation to have multiple covers more than ever, the art direction suffers across the board and the streaming one is typically mid.

Back in the day it was always one alternate cover for the deluxe, rarely more than that.

for reference, The Life of a Showgirl has 8 alternate covers so far.

Don't know why but your AVI makes me angry :doc:

Didn't she have than that for Folklore too, on two formats ?

why are so many people incapable of an original thought i've seen 5 different variations of this "hot take" in the last month
