The Olivia beef is so yesterday for me, I truly couldn't care less. I will never stan her, but I'm enjoying the new album. Also very impressed at her debut.

I will say, and this isn't a drag towards her whatsoever, it's funny to see people (rightfully!) celebrating her huge debut which was largely driven by pure sales and variants. The streams were actually quite close to Guts. Nearly all her growth is pure. She had 52 versions. And she still isn't selling 500k! I grant her debut is very impressive, but it's funny to me that ATRL can recognize that even with variants (in this case more than Showgirl) selling that pure is extremely difficult and impressive and not recognize the same thing when Taylor sells over 3.4 million pure .

Showgirl's debut is genuinely the most impressive in history. Outright and in-context. I'd say TTPD's was already equivalent to 25's debut with how the numbers keep dropping.

yeah, i think there's a real reluctance to give showgirl its flowers because of the sense that "oh she's just trying to make a hit album" but that's what she did! people can drag it all they want but it's a fun and easy listen and people clearly enjoy it, if it was that easy then people would do that all the time and make a ton of money and they don't cos they can't

TLOAS is undeniably her worst album ever. Just trash music with four or five good songs on it. It is an embarrassment in EVERY level of songwriting.

Imagine saying "but it's successful" when your incredibly talented fave releases that hot garbage which everyone hates and it's flopping on daily streams not even a year after the release date

I wish Madeline had a prominent public platform she used regularly. I love hearing her takes in his videos with her. Him I can generally do without, though his long form essays on pop culture analysis are pretty interesting to me. His more candid videos where he says someone should die, even in jest, is not something I really enjoy.

I just think everyone operates in extremes when it comes to Taylor. If it's not a masterpiece, it's "hot garbage." I just don't think that's true.

The first four tracks and Ruin The Friendship are genuinely excellent songs. The title track is good. That's already HALF the album. Wi$h Li$t and Honey are perfectly fine Taylor pop tracks, certainly not any worse than some of the filler on Midnights or Lover. I don't even mind Actually Romantic, she just got blowback there because of outside discourse. I think Eldest Daughter is indeed one of the worst things she has ever released, and CANCELLED! and Wood are just ridiculous songs (though both somewhat fun every now and then).

Like, is it really Hot Garbage??? Or is it just a bit mid? I've made this point before, but if other pop girls released an album this late in their career with just Ophelia and Opalite on them and 10 tracks of flaming hot garbage, we'd have to hear about them being pop Bibles and a return to form.

Of course it isn't holding up as well as previous Taylor albums because there is a lot of better Taylor music to listen to! But Taylor's discography is suffering from that everywhere. Midnights daily streams are in the toilet, other albums are not as high as they should be. It's just because she has an enormous and widely loved catalogue. The streams are quite distributed. Most pop stars have 1-3 albums people care about streaming. Taylor has ~10.

Showgirl is just a bit of a mid-album! But because it's Taylor the sky has to fall. It actually reminds me a lot of the way people treat Lover. Lover would be one of the best albums in many discographies, but it's lackluster in Taylor's so it's treated like it's terrible. I think even Swifties have allowed themselves to be caught up in the hate train surrounding her last year (that was just an opposite reaction to the overwhelming she-can-do-no-wrong hero worship she was getting in 2023).

think this is absolutely true but also, quality wise do i think showgirl is worse than lover? god no, lover has some real lulls, and as someone who is not a fan of that kind of rootsy indie rock i find folklore a drag at times as well, esp thru the final third

agree with yr assessment of the first side but also, wood, title track and honey are top level taylor for me and cancelled and AR are entertainingly bitchy gossip fodder at very least, there's only really wi$h list where i'm a bit bored. idk, i just like pop music and i do wonder why that codes so terribly on ATRL of all places lmao
