Chuck Schumer refusing to step down despite criticism

Featured Replies

After caving to Donald Trump and voting for a Republican-backed short-term government funding bill, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer has faced calls to resign from members of his own party. But Schumer is not backing down on that fight, saying he will not quit his leadership position.

"I'm not stepping down," Schumer said in an interview with Kristen Welker that aired Sunday on NBC's Meet the Press.

Nine Democrats joined Schumer in voting for the legislation that increased defense spending and cut $13 billion in non-defense spending, giving Trump broad discretion to direct the funds.

Rep. Glenn Ivey was the first to publicly call for Schumer to resign. "I respect Chuck Schumer," the Democrat from Maryland said at a Tuesday town hall. "I think he had a great, long-standing career, did a lot of great things, but I'm afraid that it may be time for the Senate Democrats to get a new leader."

While no senators have asked Schumer to step aside, some have criticized his leadership. Sen. Elizabeth Warren saidSchumer was "wrong" to capitulate to Trump.

It's giving Biden's "I'm not stepping down" moment :rip:

Seems like a story they would want to keep running so progressives have somewhere to place their rage until he is inevitably replaced. Almost like a distraction for liberals to take the heat off Trump policies that current Dems are complicit in passing.

And he won't step down or be voted out of his position as minority leader cuz the senators are cucked losers largely speaking. The only solution is for AOC to primary his ass in 2028…hate having to wait that long tho

If we had term limits, Schumer would have been gone 15 years ago. We need them desperately.

I think the issue with term limits is that they need to be paired with removing money from politics to be effective. Sure, term limits in a small way will make it less worthwhile for donors to try and buy off politicians, but it can also just make it so big industries continue a revolving door of donations.

Sinema just needed one term in the Senate to cash out for example. Who knows if term limits would also result in younger candidates.

At this point, there's no correlation between either age or time in the Senate versus how corrupt or not corrupt a senator is.

It'd be nice to term limit Schumer for being on his 5th term but I also wouldn't want to lose Bernie who is on his 4th term.

For example, if you limit it to just 2 terms in the Senate like many governorships, 66% (31/47) of the current Senate Dems would be gone by 2030.

Sounds like music to my ears. I love Bernie but I love fresh faces more...sacrifice is necessary in politics. This system was never meant to be the lifelong career many politicians have turned it into. Even the good ones are susceptible to the taint.

Feinstein, Biden and now Schumer.  The democrats need to be taught how to step down.

It just shows that they will always put their egos over what is best for the American people.

RBG--the blueprint of old liberal stubbornness. :rip:

Say it with me everyone, "Dems are NOT incompetent, they are COMPLICIT!"

They want to retain power because of the financial benefits

All politicians need to perish, none are on our side

... some are though... I would estimate that a good 241 / 78,382 globally active politicians work FOR the people... = 0,30%.

AOC and Bernie come to mind. The US might have actually 2-5 politicans who work for their constituents. We need to save those 5 (or 241 people).

But 78,141 politicans need to perish.

Oh my how could I forget RBG too.  Wow.

Maybe we should get an open casket prepared so he'll have a place to step down to.

Of course he's not stepping down. His entire job is to pretend to be an opposition leader while being knowingly and intentionally ineffectual. Why would we expect anything else, at this point? If indeed we still have freedom in this country and the whole system isn't rigged - which I don't think is guaranteed - then the only option for successfully navigating this current brush with fascism is the complete and total dismantling of the Democratic Party, replacing it with an entity that actually wants to work for the people and not for the enrichment of itself and its allies behind the scenes.

I mean if this is the outcome of the current political system, we need to do away with the current political system :skull:

I think he could end up stepping aside in 2027… if a bunch of Dem Senators end up losing their seats, as I predict they will be. If they luck out and manage to hold on to more seats than expected, he'll claim it's due to strong confidence in his leadership and demand that he stay on as minority leader, just like Biden did when he misread the midterm results as a positive referendum on himself rather than a negative referendum on the Republicans after Dobbs.

i wanna believe that will happen but I dont think so tbh. I think Dems are going to sweep in mid terms and misread the mandate again. They will think its cuz Americans want this centrist bs and become more conservtive and nominate Gavin Newsom or someone like that to be their 2028 Presidential candidate even tho that's not what dems want. But because trump is so bad at the moment, dems will flock to vote this time and get in more senators and stuff in the midterms and they will just misread things again.

Midterms are going to end up being a wash in the House (with the margins being so close that they could lose their majority purely out of having their extremely ANCIENT representatives die from old age) and they're pretty much guaranteed to lose Ossoff's seat to Kemp and Shaheen's seat due to her retiring and leaving it open for Sununu to sweep in. The Democrats have completely failed to meet the moment and they're not going to inspire people to vote them in with their lackluster resistance.
