What is it about Marilyn Monroe...

Featured Replies

that is so fascinating and intriguing?

There's just something about her looks specifically, like her facial bone structure maybe? Or her heart shaped face, her sanpaku eyes and especially her heavy-lidded facial expressions that even AI just can't replicate (like that weird 2013 Dior ad) that look strangely unique even though blonde hair and blue eyes are very generic in Hollywood and there have been countless beautiful blonde icons before and after Marilyn, some are arguably more beautiful and some have also died young so you can't really say that's the main reason why she's still iconic.

Like there's just something about her face, it's not just about beauty, it's hard to describe it. Kinda like Mona Lisa I guess where there's a hint of ambiguity and she looks so unique but also common at the same time? Idk

Dunno but this song is a masterpiece [2]

My Marilyn Monroe, but the modern day :jamming:

I think that what she and Britney had in common was that they were capable of showing immense vulnerability and earnestness which made men like them and women root for them.  Of course they got loads of backlash too.

She was never alive to potentially ruin her legacy. Not that she would've, but as she died at the height of her fame, her image and legacy as THE American sex symbol was kind of immortalized into pop culture for ages to come.

beauty, feminine, sassy, vulnerable and a hint of slutty.

unapologetically feminine beauty

I agree above.  Her and Britney shares the same facial energy

This. No one ever saw her publicly looking a mess or old + her death conspiracy and steamy affair with JFK adds to her allure and interest.

1- You grow familiar to her since her face is everywhere when you grown up wether in pictures or painting/films

2- She doesnt have one "ugly" picture since back then just getting photography was special and she died young and beautiful

3- There is always an homage or movie every year

She was the face of old Hollywood, so people aren't just enamoured by her, they're enamoured by that time period.

The empowerment of female sexuality and seduction, reinventing beauty standards, showing more skin and curves than generations before them.

It was like a new era of humanity, which we're still in today. Everything before this era was truly "the olden days."

This 100%. They were able to appear both naive and precocious. They embody what it means to be a true coquette.

I totally agree with the OP. There is sth so special about her. She can just be a huge LEGEND solely due to her uniqueness and iconicness.

As someone that used to think Marilyn was hugely overrated and then became a fan, the appeal (for me) was never about her beauty (although I love her looks in Misfits).

For me it was learning about how sensitive, intelligent and progressive that she was that made me adore her.

She was a genius. Very self aware and in control of her image. She knew how to emote sensuality  and present an aura of untouchability, mystique and charm that no one has been able to replicate. As natural as it seemed, she was very much in complete control of the image of Marilyn Monroe. Also helped that she was gorgeous and the quintessential blonde.

also, i don't think her and Britney share hardly any similarities despite being highly publicized and troubled icons.

shes like the original Paris Hilton, very very smart but played up the "dumb blonde" character so much that people thought she was a complete airhead. still, people loved her.

Paris has a few bops but let's not compare a nepo baby to a legitimately self-made icon.

Like others have said she represents a cultural shift for both women in media and for women in Hollywood. Her rise to stardom was at a moment in time when media was branching out of just radio and into television. Hollywood had become its own entity in ways it never was before. Newspapers were branching away from just news, and became more sensationalized. It was a culmination of the world as it once was changing to the world as we now know it. Marilyn in particular was really the first woman in Hollywood who's life became as big as her roles. From her sexuality to her alleged affairs, the public was fascinated by her and so was the media. She was alluring, mysterious, beautiful, complicated, and most importantly she had the ability to pull you in unlike any star prior. Before Marilyn, every big star followed an archetype. After Marilyn, women with voluptuous figures and autonomy (even if it was just part of an act) became the norm. Her unapologetic femininity made her a trailblazer in that sense. This is post-WWII so many women were just kicked out of the workforce when they were filling in for the men that went off to war. Nothing about life was glamourous. She fundamentally changed what a woman can be, how a woman can act, and most importantly exuded an alpha-like confidence to her that society as a whole felt like only men could have.

Unfortunately at the time many disliked her for all these things, but her untimely death froze her in time and made people realize that behind all that beauty and confidence was an intelligent woman who had a very hard life. And since we've seen how women like her have been risen up and torn down for decades now, her impact is forever felt. In many ways, she birthed pop culture as we now know it.

nothing. She was a pretty woman. She simply represents old Hollywood and a heightened sense of femininity which people glamorize for whatever reason. Now as a person (not an actress) I will say that she is much more interesting and complex and thats probably where the mystique still lies.

I never mentioned anything regarding talent, cos I agree with both of you. I was only talking about the persona of a dumb blonde

People are always enamoured with celebrities who die young. a) They never got old so they're immortalised as a young adult forever and b) It allows for endless speculation about what could have been. James Dean is another example
