I'm kidding. It just baffled me that a song that basic (and kinda bad) reacted so much to social media virality. I don't care that much.

Your problem is that you're still comparing the girls. BD is a dance-pop song from the 2000s which is a standout from its parent album and is not only an easy listen but has wide appeal

All Night is an R&B single, and it is excellent

R&B vs Dance pop? Which typically has more appeal?

I hope EIL was an eye-opening experience for both of them.  But, given how stubborn they both are, I could see them swinging for it again. 

 

I'd love a new Jay album.  4:44 was great... I don't want him anywhere on the final act, though, unless it's a writing credit.

I always felt the biggest problem with EIL's success was them storing it under the The Carters name, which people aren't going to be looking for. The music is good.

This is a fair point. 

Also, I don't understand why the Hive hates EIL so much. I know it's not groundbreaking but there are some great songs on it and it was a nice bonus for us fans to get some new music from Beyoncé whilst we were waiting for a proper album. I will never say no to new music from her, so it's alien to me when people complain about it 

 

EIL is one of my favorite projects ever 

15/16 over 100 million is good.

It's a tricky one. I VIVIDLY remember producer tea going around about a Bey x Jay collab album at the top of 2014 amidst the DIL buzz, and everyone was here for it. Jay was still in the mix as an active major name (competitively speaking), Bey was in the midst of a creative/star-soaring resurgence. It would have been everything. 

 

They waited. 

 

Elevator gate happened ("oh, not as unbreakable power couple as we thought"). Lemonade happened ("oh sh*t, he cheated, f**k him"). 444 happened ("nice, mature, all the things, but we're tired"). Essentially, Carter fatigue. 

 

EIL arrived as the unofficial Act 3 of a pretty challenging trilogy of releases (for their image as a power couple). So, it was either received as overkill or just outrightly rejected because of its proximity to the drama, and it was selling us (by way of its title) the idea that "forget all the drama, all is good here". 

 

I also think the music was a little too mellow, chill, and elevated for most palettes (the surface reading = "boring"). They were rapping/singing about rich people-ish over ultra chill production. The masses want/expect club bangers and bops. Besides Apesh*t, which could arguably be deemed a Formation p2, there was nothing of the sort available. 

 

So, IMO, it flopped because of:

 

* Artist name: Arriving at the dawn of the streaming era and not being optimized for discoverability was...a choice. Playing devil's advocate, having their names attached and it still flopping would have made it all worse. But I think it was a) worth the risk and b) would have given the music a chance to have a resurgence with deeper dives into their streaming profiles in later years. On many platforms, it's rotting in a corner as "The Carters".

* Timing: Would have gone down better after ST but before Lemonade. 

 

* Tne Music: self-explanatory 
 

* Bonus: not doing dropping a joint project for OTR1 was dumb. And then ironically doing it in the middle/end of OTRII (with a less welcoming vibe from fans) was equally dumb.

EIL is inoffensive but it doesn't have the classic boundary pushing feel of a Beyoncé project. It's my least revisited project of hers. BLACK EFFECT is the best song. 

Well I can't believe nothing happened

I feel like EIL feels kind of rushed, or half cocked. I don't know, it doesn't feel lush like a typical Beyonce album. 

I can never be mad at an album that gave me BLACK EFFECT and APESHIT.

Bey's part on Black Effect where she goes "higher.... higher.... higher... higher"... just pure bliss!

We complain that Bey is elusive and doesn't promote, but we know damn well that if she ever did anything like this, we'd be unstanning so fast.

the music is fine

Let's be very clear, although it gave us a good song or two, EIL is, if nothing else, boastful but also unnecessary and sits COMFORTABLY at the bottom of her overall discography where DC's debut and 8DOC also sit
