Rennie set pace and truly cemented her in the streaming era as a renewed force in her 40s. It unquestionably was more of a cultural and viral music moment than CC too (which is fine because not every album will be that, especially successively). 

 

IMO, CC continued the buzz in its own way, but I don't think it dramatically elevated it (in and of itself). It is keeping the "trilogy" narrative buzzy and intriguing ahead of the conclusion that will be Act III. 

 

In short, Rennie remains that girl, CC is an important birdge, and my hope is that Act III is better than them both (which will be a tall order given how great they are).

from an artistic perspective, yeah. its her magnum opus imo. simply for what it means to her and her artist ethos.

 

shes been exploring various genres for years but finally taking on a single genre for a full album is unprecedented for her and she knocked it out of the park. i mean just look at the discourse it created around country music and americana as a whole. as a quinessential american artist, it's going to be a body of work looked back on in 20 years as a watershed moment, especially for Black music.

 

RENAISSANCE is a landmark album for sure, but it is more in the wheelhouse of familiarity. I think a lot of fans connect to it because its queer-centered and that makes it special to them. but i think CC holds more meaning to B.

The best lineup is the original one that happens to be there if you chop Michelle from the picture.
